Richardson, Joseph

Company "C" & Colors

Joseph Richardson enlisted in Calhoun Co. Mich. in Company "C" of the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry at the age of 18.

He eventually became the Color Sergeant for the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry.

The 2nd Mich. entered Petersburg, Virginia, in the early morning of 3 April 1865, on the heels of the First Michigan Sharpshooters after months of siege.

He entered the city and after loosing the race to be the First to raise a Union flag over the city to the 1st Mich. Sharp Shooters he unfurled the flag over the U.S. Customs House.
