Note: When my sister Merrie graduated from 8th grade, my grandparents presented her with a diamond ring selected from my grandfather's store. F. G. Minger died in 1944 when I was 7 years old., but when I graduated from Junior High School, my grandmother 'Sudie' presented me with the diamond ring he had set aside for me at the time of Merrie's graduation. I passed my ring on to my daughter on a similar occassion.
My father, his sister Virginia and her family drove from Illinois to Sabetha, Kansas for grandpa's funeral. When they returned home, Dad brought back a Mountain Ash which he planted in our back yard. That first year I was taller than the tree, but the next year the tree had outgrown me. One year my mother became concerned that all the berries were falling from the tree. The problem was traced to the Wickersham's cat living next door who loved to lie in the tree and bat at the berries. In my mind I linked the Mountain Ash tree with Grandpa Minger, so adored by cats - we have a Mountain Ash planted in our back yard today. |
