Note: When I was in the 7th grade at school, I decided I would become a famous geologist when I grew up. I began collecting rocks. When we visited my grandmother Sudie that summer, she showed me the rocks in her birdbath and her retaining wall constructions and their history. Before we returned home to Illinois, Sudie got out her stone mason's hammer and knocked off rock samples from the wall for me to take I was both horrified and delighted. I still have most of the samples. Our daughter Sue was named after Sudie; she continued Sudie's interest in rocks, becoming a genealogy major at University of New Mexico. [I was a math major]
Sudie kept a fishing pole on her kitchen wall. When she felt like having a fish for dinner or wanted some meditation time, she would take down the rod and go fish in a nearby stream.
An assortment of cats hung around my grandparents home; they were devoted to my grandfather. Sudie, however, only allowed an all black cat as house cat. My father continued the black cat tradition in our home when I was growing up. The tradition goes on: Steve and I have our all black Quincy cat, and Sue has her own black Zack cat . I don't know if the black cat addiction is a Rickard or a Minger trait. My cousin John Minger made a survey of Minger traits and found that nearly all Mingers like cats. Among my Rickard relatives, I found quite a few that had black cats. |
