Genealogy of Enoch V. Kauffman
and Family Descent from Barney Kauffman (Written  March 4th 1907.)
Barney Kauffman, son of Daniel and Mary Burner Kauffman, was born Dec. 16th, 1815, and was married to Miss Rebecca Mauck, Feb. 22nd, 1838. Rebecca Mauck was born April 21st, 1819.
To this union were born eight children, viz: Joseph Franklin, Enoch VanBuren, Ellen Virginia, Julia A., Philip Marian, Susan Elizabeth, Mary Magdalene and John W.
Joseph Franklin Kauffman, son of Barney and Rebecca Mauck Kauffman was born Dec. 22nd, 1838, and was married to Nancy Sealta Beasley, December 20th, 1860. Was killed in the battle of Manassas Junction, Aug. 28th, 1862. To them was born one son, William Barney, who was born in '61 and died March 6th 1873.
Enoch V. Kauffman, son of Barney and Rebecca Mauck Kauffman, was born near the banks of the Shenandoah River in Page County, Virginia, Nov. 6th, 1840, where he spent his boyhood days. When the Civil war broke out he at the age of 20 years enlisted in a company of volunteers and went with them to Harper's Ferry in defense of his country.  The company consisted of 95 men and was known as Co. K. At Harper's Ferry they were assigned to the 10th Virginia regiment commanded by Col. S. B. Gibbons, of Harrisonburg, Va., and who was afterward killed in battle at McDowell, W. Va. Captain W. T. Young commanded Co. K until the reorganization the second year of the war. E. V. Kauffman went through the four years of toil and hardships attending a soldier's life, and after experiencing many hard spells of sickness and being made a prisoner of war twice and participating in 27 battles he returned to him home to find the country in a badly dilapidated condition, the war having lasted from April, 1861, to April, 1865.
During all this unpleasantness there had quite a great change come over the country and the people as well; everything in the way of subsistance was very high, and there being no money in the country, all one could do was to exchange trade for labor, such as wheat, corn, flour, meat, etc., which of course were staple articles and came in good use for those who had a family dependent upon them for support. But for the young man who was trying as best he could to get a start in the world it was very different. The difference between labor and trade was too great. Wheat was $2.00 per bushel, corn 75 cents, flour $10 per barrel, and wages for farm hands ranged from $8 to $10 per month. This did not suit the ambitious young men as they began to turn their course westward, but, money being very scarce it was hard on those who wanted to go west but were forced to wait until an opportunity presented itself. In this case the opportunity came sooner than was expected. A cousin, Jeremiah Slusher, who was formerly from Page county, Virginia, but who had some years previous gone to Hancock County, Illinois, came to Page County on a visit and proffered the loan of money enough with which to go west which offer was gladly accepted and on April 17th, 1867, left home and friends for the then far west, arriving at Bentley, Hancock County, Illinois, on the 21st of the same month. Here he found a host of relatives who had left Virginia in an early day. After working for a couple of years he concluded to change his mode of living and on Feb. 2nd, 1869, was united in marriage to Mrs. Sarah Luemma (Harter) Slusher, by Elder Thomas Jones, an Old School Baptist minister. They then moved to Bates County, Missouri, the following April where they lived for two and one half years when they returned to Illinois. Here they remained for two years, when they again went to Missouri, settling near the same place where they lived until the Spring of 1881, they moved to Oneida, Kansas where they lived for several years, they then moved to Sabetha, Nemeha County, Kansas, in 1887, then to Bern, Kansas, in 1889, where they kept hotel.
