Sound like a line dance? As this verbiage hit the unsuspecting average Joe Workperson several years ago, I realized it was time to wake up and take note, or I would need a course in "Computer Lingo as a Second Language." I mean really - do you recall when:

  • Open your program is what you did at a social function and you were handed a written agenda to read.
  • Enter meant to walk through the door.
  • Don't forget to save was something your parents taught you about money.
  • A mouse was an unwelcome guest, floppy meant flimsy, and a drive was something you did on Sunday afternoon.
  • Dot Com or Dot Net could be somebody's name. What's your address meant where do you live. You knew about a salad bar, a dessert bar, and a candy bar, but nobody ever mentioned a toolbar.
  • Mistakes could not be magically obliterated with the touch of the undo button.
  • Cut and paste was something you learned in Kindergarten, and you were never allowed to copy.
So what happened? I decided to - okay, I was nudged...well SHOVED, actually, into the technology boat by my sisters Linda and Vicki. Of course, they did not want me to be the computer illiterate of the family. I took a four-week introductory WORD course through CATAWBA VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE Continuing Education program. That was six years ago, and I now teach that very class at CVCC, as well as the beginning level Excel classes.

Since classes are limited to twelve hours over four evenings, the focus is to expose students to the vast capabilities of the program, and basics needed to make their documents look professional. We also review the essential concepts of file management. The challenge is the diversity of skill levels - not leaving anyone behind, while making sure more experienced students do not get "bored." My goal: to help students increase their skills, making the learning process non-stressful and FUN.
