A purple river of salvias at Dreampark, Enköping, Sweden

Enköping lies 70 km NW of Stockholm. The inspiration of Piet Oudolf is to be seen in this garden which is planted with more than 220 species of perennials.

For more information on this modern approach to planting in public gardens see The Garden, November 2000, pp. 846-849.

Who are we?

Welcome to our web site. 'Purple Deckers/Purple Decking Society' is the name adopted by a community of gardening students who studied together at Myerscough College near Preston, Lancashire, England. The name arose spontaneously after a discussion about the merits of wooden decking as a garden design feature, and whether painting it purple represents good or bad taste.

The aim of this site is to encourage knowledge sharing among gardening students. There is no commercial interest.

Leyland cypress gets a
new name

Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (Nootka cypress
), one of the parents of x Cupressocyparis leylandii, has been renamed as Xanthocyparis nootkatensis.

This means that x Cupressocyparis leylandii (a cross between Nootka cypress and Cupressus macrocarpa) must also be renamed. Its new name is x Cuprocyparis leylandii. (From The Garden, February 2002, p. 81.)
