YARMOUTH - September 30 - One of Yarmouth County's best known citizens, George Warren McGray, passed away at his home in Chegoggin on Thursday September 24. Seventy-eight years of age, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick (Eunice Deviller) McGray and was born in East Chebogue.
An interior decorator by trade, Mr. McGray was better known for his talents as an entertainer, especially in recitations of French Canadian stories and poems.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters: Mrs. Lawrence Cann, Sydney, and Mrs. Loren Sweeney, Chegoggin; four sons, Warren, Truro; John, Lakeside; Clarence, Hebron; Rev. George McGray, Halifax; one brother, Fred McGray, Needham, Massachusetts; six sisters, Miss Lydia McGray, Mrs. Alfred McKenzie, Mrs. William Earle, Mrs. Henry Reynolds, all of Massachusetts; Mrs. Gordon Smith, Salem; also 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. from the Chegoggin United Baptist Church with Rev. L.R. Graves officiating, assisted from Rev. H.U. Hutchison.

Born March 10, 1918, in Pinkney's Point, he was a son of the late William and Elizabeth (Surette) DeViller. Following the untimely death of his mother, he was raised by Edmund and Louise (Clements) Surette, along with Marion Doucette and the late Adolphe Fitzgerald and Edith Boudreau. He was a retired lobster fisherman, who, along with his wife, enjoyed camping. Edmund was a member of the Wedgeport Retired Fishermen's Association. Surviving are his wife of nearly 63 years, Cecilia (Harrington) DeViller; son, Garth (Theresa), Melbourne; daughters, Glenda (Dave) Roberts, Melbourne; Isabelle (Charles) Boutlier, Dartmouth; Ann (Walter) Spinney, Melbourne. Edmund and Cecilia also raised John (Yvonne) LeBlanc, Melbourne; Dianne Gerrior, who passed away in March, 2001. Also surviving are sisters, Rita Ryan, Chegoggin; Evangeline Saulnier, Addie (Richard) Doucette, both of Pinkney's Point; Mathilda Dugas, Grosses Cocques; Genevieve Allen, Ontario; Corinne Jacquard, Wedgeport; brothers, Stanley, Irvin, both of Pinkney's Point; Wallace, Plymouth; Ernest, Larry, both of Melbourne; Howard, Wedgeport; Frank, Yarmouth; grandchildren, Walter, Garth, Darryl, Victoria, Warren, Shelley, Richard, Philip, Nicholas; 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters, Janet and Celina; brothers, William and Lawrence. Visitation was 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, January 23 with prayers at 8 p.m., both in H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth. Funeral mass was 10 a.m. Friday, January 24, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Melbourne, Father Gerald LeBlanc officiated. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association.

NEW MINAS- John David McGray, 69, of New Minas, died Monday in Blanchard Memorial Hospital.
Born in Arcadia, he was the son of the late George and Abbie (Nickerson) McGray.
He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of New Minas Baptist Church and was a former member of New Minas Volunteer Fire Department. He was a former Deacon of Yarmouth North Baptist Church andwas a veteran of the Second World War, serving with theRCAF. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch, No. 61, Yarmouth.
Surviving are his wife, the former Muriel Sargent; a daughter, Carold (Mrs. Leslie Millet), New Minas; two sisters, Myra (Mrs. L.W. Cann) Marion Bridge, Cape Breton; Pearl (Mrs. Loran Sweeney), North Chegoggin; three brothers, Warren, Truro; Clarence, Middleton; Rev. George McGray, Halifax; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by a brother. (Carl)
The body is at W.C. Hiltz Funeral Home, Kentville. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 pm in New Minas Baptist Church, Rev. Harold Merrill officiating. Burial will be Friday at 2 pm in North Chegoggin Baptist Church Cemetery, Yarmouth County.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Minas Baptist Church memorial fund, the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Gideon Bible Society.

General Notes: Clarence became ill in May of 1997.
February 14, 1998 - Valentines Day - Clarence passed away at 5:15 pm, with his son Ted by his side. He had been admitted two days prior, to hospital with what the nurses called a "raging infection", possibly pneumonia, and although his last hours were spent in unconsciousness, he maintained his smile and good humor to the end.
Clarence is buried in the Chegoggin Cemetery, and lies next to his mother, Abbie Maria Nickerson McGray. The site is on the upper side of a hill which overlooks Chegoggin, his birthplace.
