As far back as the beginning of life on earth, mankind has had to experiment with plants to find out which were edible and were fatal.Along the way, some were put aside for magick or medicine, and it is from these that the many folk remedies evolved. The Egyptians, around 4500BC were the first to distil plants in order to extract their essential oils. They used them medicinally,in religious ceremonies,as beautifying skin and face potions and perfumes,as well as for embalming. The oils were so highly priced that they were offered to the gods. The Romans on the other hand, used essential oils for giving pleasure as much as for curing pain, and had leisurely, perfumed baths and massages every day. Emperor Nero's love of orgies, feasts and fragrances is legendary. His most favourite was Chamomile used to treat skin complaints and help heal wounds, and now known to contain azulene,a natural anti-inflammatory agent, which is why it has such a rejuvenating effect on skin.
In Greece,India,China and Arabia the use of aromatics thrived, but it wasn't until the 12th century that perfumery and herbalism spread to Europe. In 1665 the year of the Great Plague it was so well established that Londoners burnt bundles of lavender, cedar and cypess in the streets, and posies of the same plants as their only defence against infectious desease. It undoubtedly saved thousands of lives, since these plants all contain powerful antiseptic agents.

Aromatherapy is a modern name for the ancient knowledge of healing and improving health using fragrant, natural ingredients. These ingredients, called essential oils, are found in herbs, plants, flowers, fruits and the bark, roots or resin of some trees. Essential oils give the aroma to the plants, but also contain dozens of complex chemicals that seem to do everything from beautifying skin to speeding healing to putting you to sleep or numbing a headache. The use of essential oils:Essential oils give pleasure with their wonderful smells, improving health and well-being with their magic ingredients, and can be used in dozens of ways throughout your home.No matter how you use them, they don't need any special equipment or fancy preparation. It can be as simple as unscrewing the bottle and breathing in. Massage is the most common way of using essential oils. Some people would say it is the most pleasurable, combining as it does, the sences of touch and smell. It is the most therapeutic method as essential oils are diluted in carrier oil.Like the use of Almond oil;Sunflower;Grapeseed and Olive oil and others, which are massaged directly into the skin.Massage has two further bonuses;it stimulates the cirulation enabling the oils to disperse rapidly around the body, and the warmth of the skin-on-skin friction makes oils smell stronger,so you get quicker-therapeutic benefits to both mind and body. Baths is the alternative to using essential oils is by adding a few drops to your bath of hot water to get the full benefits. The two main ones, are that you have steam and the warmth to evaporate the oils and intensify the aroma, and water to soften skin and speed up oil absorptions. All you have to do is lie back and soak for 15 minutes to enjoy the oils. Room Vapourisors provide a way of warming essential oils so that their aromas spread quickly to scent a room.Vapourisors are little pots with a bowl shaped bottom to hold a candle, and a saucer-shaped top to hold some water enriched with a few drops of essential oil. Other alternatives of essential oils are Beauty Treatments;Body Moisturisers;Footbaths;Room Sprays; Air Purifiers;Pot Pourri;Household Cleaners;Insect Repellent;Deodorisers;Wood Fires;Bedroom Treatments; Inhalation;Hot Poultices;Cold Compresses and Hair Care.
