Summer Secrets
Chapter 2
"Would you stop fidgeting?!" JC said and laughed as they sat in the car and drove to Cafe Trastevere.

"No! I can't.  I'm nervous.  Humor me!" Summer said.   JC glanced over to her from the corner of his eye.  She hadn't changed.  Sure her hair was longer and she had lost some weight, but her personality had not changed.  She still smiled all the time and laughed and made jokes.

"You know you look great." JC reassured.

"What if they think I'm stupid." Summer wondered out loud.

"They won't." He said calmly.  If he knew his friends like he thought he did then he was positive they would like her.  They sat in silence for the rest of the ride, while Summer continued to fidget.

"We're here." JC said, turned off the car engine and turned to face Summer.  "Ready?"

"Yeah" She said,  then opened the door and stepped out into the moist Florida air.

"JACE MAN!" Summer heard being called. Out of curiosity she turned around to search for who was calling for JC.  A tall curly haired guy who looked about her age --if not younger-- came bouncing toward JC followed by a shorter girl and two other 3 other guys.

"What's up?" JC asked and did one of those 'dude hand shake things'.

"Nothing.  Where's your friend?" The guys asked.  Just as if on cue Summer walked around the car and into their presence.  Everyone looked over at her.  Summer felt herself turning warm.  She never liked people staring at her.

"Summer, this is Justin, his girlfriend Nichole, Lance, Joey and Chris.  Guys and girl, this is Summer." JC introduced.  Everyone instantly went over to greet her.

"Hi" Summer said to the guy which she had been introduced to as Joey.  Instead of shaking her hand as she expected he pulled her in for a large hug.  It was awkward but gave her a sense of comfort.  People usually just didn't hug her.  Her formal introduction with the rest of them continued.  Each one gave her a hug and introduced themselves again.  They stressed how great it was to have her there.

They all walked into the restaurant.  All of them obviously went there often because the host knew who they were and they knew who the host was.  They were seated at their "usual table."  This was the part Summer was nervous about.  The millions of questions that would herd her way.  Not that she wouldn't gladly answer them.  It was just she felt as if she were on the spot.  And she had never appreciated that feeling.

"Not too bad right?" JC asked once they were in the car pulling out of the parking lot.

"No, They were really nice actually." Summer said again with her usual smile on her face.  That smile that always clung on her lips was what JC remember the most.  That smile.  Her teeth were perfectly straight and white and her lips smooth and full with a small hint of color.

"I told you they would like you." He said yet again.  They sat in silence for the rest of the drive back to JC's house.  He could see her out of the corner of his eye.  He could see her looking out the window admiring the sites of Orlando while she quietly sang to the music coming out of the speakers.  He would occasionally look over at her to keep her entire body in focus.  He would then remember he had to keep his eyes on the road and look back.  Again he looked over at her.

"Why do you keep looking at me, Chasez?" She asked trying her hardest to be serious while a smile fought its way onto her lips.

"I don't know." He laughed. "Do you want to rent a movie?" He asked as they neared Blockbuster.

"Yeah sure." She said and tapped her fingers on her leg to the beat of the music.

After a half an hour of arguing over "Don't tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" and "Ferris Beuller's Day Off" they finally both decided on "Ferris Beuller's Day Off."

The drive to JC's house mostly consisted of old memories and stupid things they used to do when they were younger.

They spent the rest of the night watching the movie and eating ice cream.  Before they knew it they were both asleep on the couch.  Neither of them would realize their awkward position until the next morning...
