| ...Bacchae Revisited... | ||||||||
| Exodus (Final Scene) (Barbara enters, carrying Ws head on her stick, she is smiling slightly maniacally.) BARBARA: Were bringing him home from the mountains, the terrorist who tried to spy on us; he tried to sneak into our city. He thought he could impose his restrictions on the women of America, but we caught him, we caught him. CHORUS LEADER: I see, yes, you are one of us. BARBARA: I caught him, with no gun, no knife. A terrorist! CHORUS: You certainly did, youve done away with him. Who dealt the first blow? BARBARA: That honor was mine. The other women hail me as a hero. Come and join our celebration, were going to have a banquet. CHORUS: Join you? In your misery? (sighs, playing along) Who else will you bring? BARBARA: Of course my husband... CHORUS: And your son George W.? BARBARA: Oh of course, hell praise me for setting an example for the women of America. We are strong, we too can fight against the terrorist threat. CHORUS: So you rejoice? BARBARA: Oh yes! It was magnificent, I felt so powerful. I want everyone to know about this. CHORUS: Then go to the press conference, theyre gathering as we speak. Show them your victory; poor, wretched woman. (They look over and notice reporters gathering. Barbara lightly runs over to the podium and stands smiling behind it. She is still holding the cane with Ws head, and shes holding it next to the podium, in plain site of everyone there. There is a murmur among the reporters, and they quiet down when she begins to speak.) BARBARA: Hello, Im so glad you are here to witness this triumphant day. Come and see the head, the remains of this terrorist that I caught, the other women and I took him down with our bare hands. Who needs multimillion dollar weapons, when you have the power of passionate women? Women who want to help keep their country safe from men who come to impose their oppressive rule. Where is my husband? Where is my son? I want my Georges here to witness my joy. (Enter George Sr., followed by men who carry the rest of George W. covered on a stretcher.) SR.: Here, place the stretcher over here. (Now to Barbara) That horrible thing you carry is your other George. It was hard to find the rest of him, he was torn to pieces so badly. I didnt hear about this tragedy until I returned to the city with Colin, then I ran back up to the mountains. I found some of the women still up there, raving madly. I heard that my lovely wife had already danced down the mountain, so I came this way, and now I almost regret finding her. BARBARA: Oh George, no one can brag about his wife more than you. I dropped all my little domestic trifles to serve my country, Ive helped you honorably. Take his head and show it off proudly to your friends, and theyll say that you have one of the most wonderful wives. SR.: I cant take all of this in. Wonderful? Murderous! You struck down your son, because that cunning Virginia plotted against us. BARBARA: Well youre hard to please! Thats old age for you, always puts a scowl in a mans eye. I wish my son would follow my example and catch a real terrorist, rather than waging war across the world. When will someone send him over here? SR.: (crying in horror) What will it take to show you? When you know what youve done youll feel the most horrible pain, but if you stay like this youll never have a clue. BARBARA: What do you mean? My act is not beautiful? Its painful? SR.: First, my dear, let your eyes look up to the sky. Up here. BARBARA: Im looking. Why did you suggest this? SR.: (ignoring her question) Is it the same? Or do you think the sky changes? BARBARA: Its brighter, its practically glowing. SR.: And that fluttering sensation, do you still feel that in your soul? BARBARA: I, I dont know what you mean, but I feel like Im coming back to myself. Im moving away from some old thoughts. SR.: Can you listen and answer clearly? BARBARA: (She looks at him) Ive forgotten what we were talking about dear. |
