Why Teach?

If you really want to know why I have become a teacher, you have to read this...

Honestly speaking, when I was a student, I had never thought of being a teacher.  At that time, I thought that teaching was extremely tedious because a teacher had to repeat the exact same content every year.  When I finished my Master's degree in US and returned to Hong Kong, I've got a chance to work as a substitute teacher at a secondary school for two months.  The experience had completely changed my feelings toward being a teacher.  I've found that teaching in secondary school actually can be very exciting because every kid has his special character and personality. It is just interesting to interact with them and become part of their life.

At that time, I was the class teacher of the form six science class.  I enjoyed the time so much with my students.  I always played basketball with them after school.  I even organized meetings with them after the end of the academic year in order to improve their English oral skills.  However, I declined the invitation of the headmaster to stay as a full teacher for the following semester because I thought I was just too green and naive to be a mentor of the students.  I did not have much life experience as I had spent my whole life only on campus.  I did not know the world at all. I thought I would wait until I became more mature.  However, after I had got my first job as a marketing research executive, I had put the whole idea of teaching behind my mind until I was found with a tumor in the brain.

After the operation,  I was wondering if I should continue to pursue the diploma in psychology in the Chinese University.  When I was in the hospital, I had some deep reflections.  I thought even the Lord took my life, I had no regret for the past two decades except that I wished I had spent a few years working in the society and serving others.  Suddenly, an idea came to my mind: perhaps it's time I started to be a teacher!

However, I was not certain if it was the Lord's will.  Therefore, on one hand, I kept it in my prayer. On the other hand, I sent out application letters to the schools.  I told the Lord and myself that if I could find a teaching post, I would be a teacher.  If not, then I'll further my studies.  Since I did not want to count on my skills to get the job, I did not read the classified post at all.  Instead, I chose the schools I wanted to teach and sent the application letters directly to the corresponding principals.  I received negative response from most of the schools except one and eventually I got the job successfully! It was an amazing journey and the Lord have showed me the path to be a teacher.

Time passed swiftly.  Now it has already been years since I took up a full time job as a teacher in the secondary school.  When I look back, I am  really thankful because the Lord has made a way for me.  Although there were difficult moments in the school, I did not quit because I believe this is a gift from the Lord and I am determined to try my best to serve Him here!

I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.    (Psalm 40:1-2)
