INTRODUCTION TO THE WILDLIFE OF INDIA India is one of the richest biodiversity regions
in the world. It occupies only about 2% of the world area but contains
approximately 5% of the total plant and animal species found in the world.
The climate is predominantly tropical and almost all types of habitats and ecosystems are found here. The fauna of
India consists of hundreds of interesting species of mammals, birds,
reptiles, amphibians and fishes and also a diversity of invertebrates.
However, the unscrupulous exploitation of natural resources has resulted
in adverse effects on the Indian wildlife. Magnificent animals like the
Cheetah are already extinct in India and many other beautiful beasts like
the Tiger, the Lion and the Red Panda are critically endangered. For the
conservation of such threatened species, a large number of National Parks,
Reserves and Sanctuaries have been set up and the condition is slowly
improving.
