Devotion

For Mindy, who is to me the very picture of devotion. Never stop - that's the only advice you need.

Devotion lives in black and white. Even her appearance echoes but a single word: extreme. One day, she may don nothing but a long piece of cloth reaching past her knees, and the next, a bright pink T-shirt and faded denim jeans. Her hair varies in shade and length and style, from a violent shade of spiked purple to a deep auburn falling straight past her shoulders. Yet there is one thing that she never changes, that could never change, even if she wanted it to: the light that seems to flow out straight from her heart.

Whether her will is set, her expression puzzled, or her face flushed with mirth, there is some immovable about her. It is not a forbidding look, but dauntless. It has been the same look when she smiled at the sunrise as when a blade was inches from her chest. It is something indomitable, unconquerable. I once expected Devotion to wear a blue collar or perhaps a frock, but seeing that look in her eyes, unmoving while the outside changes as quickly as the sun and moon, makes me see that she needs no sign or symbol of who she is. What I know about her for certain is that she will not be shaken, and that is the only proof she will ever need.
