Longing
Despite evidence to the contrary, I can be serious. This was a piece for my OAC Writer's Craft course, where we had to personify an emotion or state of mind. I chose longing, because that's what I felt like. Though I felt what I wrote strongly, I feel what's written here even more strongly now. It's written to let a certain person, who shall remain nameless, know how important she is to me, and the strength that she gives.
Longing always has a big smile on his face. When friends do not surround him, he is usually writing letters or taking long walks. They sometimes last only a few minutes, but he has been known to drop in on people after walking for three hours. He is very open, and people feel like they are valuable after being with him, because it seems that he withholds nothing from them. You can get a real glimpse of what his life is like just by spending time with him. It is not hard to see deep inside him, to understand his inner peace. His eyes are piercingly dark, and they seem to belong to some other body. If you get to know him well, you understand that he is much more complex than he first appears - and he seems complicated in the first place. He reveals so much, yet the more you get to know him, the more aware you become that there is so much more to know.
There is an excitement to Longing's personality, and he seems to have some special motivation that drives him to give of himself. If you know him as well as I do, you understand that even though he offers himself to others every day, he seems to be alone in the midst of a crowd. Sometimes, he will seem even more energized and happy than usual. If you ask him about it, he will usually tell you that he has just been talking with a friend, or writing a letter. He is never very unhappy, and never fails to get back all his energy whenever he needs it. Sometimes, I envy Longing, because he knows exactly where to go when he stops being his very best.
