Wisconsin Wannabes

(OSHKOSH, WI) It's been a bittersweet six months in Oshkosh, home of the Wisconsin Wannabes. After losing in the playoffs to eventual PWFFL champion Rhode Island, the big story from Titan Stadium isn't so much who IS reporting to training camp as who ISN'T.

There's no question the 'Bees have plenty of weapons returning this year, particularly at the position that most other teams are struggling to fill. Owner Sue reports that as many as six runningbacks could make it out of camp this year. Even that statistic is surrounded by controversy, though, as rumors have been flying out of Oshkosh that last year's PWFFL MVP Priest Holmes continues to battle some nagging injuries.

"Priest has NOT lost a step in camp," Sue told reporters this week. "I don't know which one of you 'cooked up' that story that he's still being bothered by injuries. Our team leader is just fine, and he's going to tear it up again this year."
Even if Holmes starts off the year a step slow, he's getting plenty of help. Wisconsin acquired Marcel Shipp in a trade with Detroit at the expense of wide receiver Rod Smith. Wideouts look to be a top priority for Sue in this draft, but the biggest story in Oshkosh could determine what happens with her first couple of picks.

Long the staple of the Wannabe franchise, quarterback Brett Favre could be moving up the road before the start of the season. Beat reporter Kara Patterson was able to leak the story last month that the Green Bay Fudgepackers have actively been pursuing Favre for quite some time. It's unclear who the 'Bees might receive in a trade, but the story has been the talk of camp-and Oshkosh.

While Sue has refused to comment on the likelihood of a Favre trade, Favre did discuss the topic in brief.

"Well, I guess this means I can't retire, huh?" Favre said jokingly. "Actually, I'm kind of sad to be hearing that I might be leaving. I love playing for Sue, and quite frankly, I was just getting up the courage to finally ask her out. Maybe now that I'm being traded, I'll finally be able to."
The Fudgepackers-the topic of the next article-are currently sporting Joey Harrington as their star quarterback. The 'Bees would be left with Tommy Maddox to take the snaps if Favre leaves and Harrington stays in Green Bay.
