Timbuktu Buccaneers

(TIMBUKTU, OR) Deep in the heart of the forests of Oregon, far from civilizationor for that matter, electricityis a team looking to shed its reputation of coming up short. As the current and future Timbuktu Buccaneers took their places in the film room for the first day of training camp, the first thing owner Jock played for them was a last-second touchdown pass from Joey Harrington to Donald Driver.

That win by the Green Bay Fudgepackers in Week 13 officially knocked the Buccaneers out of the playoffsa place they havent gotten since the PWFFLs inaugural year. Gentlemen, Jock told the group, this will NOT happen again.

The thing of it was, this wasnt just some rah-rah speech, kicker Martin Gramatica told this reporter later that day. He said it more like it was factlike he looked into the future or something.
Jock is counting the image of the Fudgepacker fans storming the field lasts in the Buccaneers memories. The thing is, the collective age of the team has many experts wondering if the players will be able to remember anything come Week 1.

Timbuktu will be closely watched come draft day to see if management can find some youth to back up the aging starting lineup. While quarterback Rich Gannon is poised for another big year, guys like WRs Keenan McCardell and Jimmy Smith, RBs James Stewart and Mike Alstott, and backup QB Rodney Peete arent exactly ignoring their pension accounts these days.

The key guys on this team are old, but theyre still hungry, Jock says. A lot of these guys remember that playoff loss, and the ones that werent here, still have the taste of those other big games in their mouths.
The Bucs have kept a relatively low profile this offseason. Practicing in the Oregon woodlands and not making any trades, an early jump out of the gate could come as a surprise to the rest of the PWFFL. The key is whether age will finally begin to take overand whether the team has enough gas in the tank this year to make another playoff run.
