This paper consist of Three Sections. Section A is compulsory. Do any Four questions from
Section B and any two questions from Section C

                                   Section-A                                       Marks : 20

1 (a) List two advantages of using Microwave Frequency over low frequency.
   (b) Define Transit time effect.
   (c) What is the basic difference between TWT and Magnetron ?
   (d) What are Avalanche transit time Devices ?
   (e) list advantages of using Gunn diodes over IMPATT diodes.
   (f) Why at microwave frequency we talk of travelling wave with associates powers instead of voltages and currents ?
   (g) Define directivity in case of a directional Coupler.
   (h) Define Faraday's rotation and also tell any device based on Faraday's rotation.
   (i) What is a Rat-race junction ?
   (j) What is the basic difference between IMPATT and TRAPAT diodes ?

Section-B                                       Marks:5 Each

2. What is velocity modulation ? How is it diferent from normal modulation ? Explain how velocity modulation is
    utilized in klystron amplifier.
3. What are slow wave structures ? Explain how a helical TWT achieve aplication.
4. Explain Gunn effect using two valley theory.
5. Describe how a tunnel diode can be used as an amplifier and as an ascillator with the necessary circuit diagrams ?
6. Define a microwave junction. How can it be described by scattering matrix ? Derive scattering matrix relation
between input and output of a n x n junction starting with an analog of a transmission line junction.

Section-C                                      Marks : 10 Each

7.(a) Explain how impedence can be measured wing slotted line method.
  (b) Discuss method for measurement of low and high microwave power.
8.(a) Compare practical advantages and disadvantages of circuit waveguides with those of rectangular waveguides.
  (b) What are cavity resonators ? what applications do they have ? Why do they normally have odd shapes ?
9. Write notes on the following :
    (a) Probes and loops
    (b) Circulators and isolators.
