On the evening of Saturday, June 16, 2001, someone placed a seriously injured cat in a black plastic bag near the middle of Bella Vista Avenue in Baypoint. Tom was tethered and used as bait in training dogs to fight, and then was placed in a plastic bag and left in the street for cars to run over.

A veterinary technician saw the cat, who had managed to get his head through a hole in the bag but appeared to be dead. The technician stopped and got a carrier from the back of her truck and took the cat to the county emergency clinic in Concord.

Voices For Pets  have given the cat the name "Tom" until his family can be found.

Tom's head was covered with dirt and blood. The right side of his head was
swollen, the pupil of the right eye was constricted, indicating a concussion. Blood filled the nostril. There was blood in his mouth, and some teeth were missing. He kept drifting into and out of consciousness.

There is a $3,000 reward offered by Voices For Pets for information leading to
the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this sadistic and cowardly act.

Tom is making good progress in his recovery. In fact, he has recovered to the point where he was able to be neutered today, and he will soon be leaving the veterinary hospital and going to a temporary foster home while awaiting adoption. Over 40 people have called and offered to adopt Tom, and they will be re-contacted and a decision made very shortly as to who will be Tom's new family.

To those of you who've asked if you can help with his veterinary bills, thank you, and yes, if you are able to, a donation would help. About $600 has been donated already, but Tom's initial emergency hospital bill alone was $800. You can donate by mail, phone or via our secure website at:
