Stop Casper, Wyoming, From
Turning on the Gas Chamber
Cases
In a time when we are struggling so hard to make advances in protecting animals, and in a time when we *are* making those advances and making progress, this shelter is moving backwards.

We need to put a stop to their use of their newly-purchased gas chamber.  We need to put a stop to the unnecessary suffering of the poor little animals who have already suffered so much.  It's tragic enough that they have to die, unwanted, but, at least, they don't have to die in agony.

Thank you.

Earlier this year, the Metro Animal Control shelter in Casper, Wyoming, announced its plan to purchase a carbon monoxide gas chamber to "kill vicious, aggressive, wild, or rabid animals." Currently, the method of euthanasia at the shelter is lethal injection, which, if done properly, is by far the most humane method. Despite continuous protests from the community, the city has purchased the $7,500 chamber and plans on using it by October.

Animal control director Mike Moore falsely claims that gassing is safer and cheaper than intravenous injection. Even the best carbon monoxide equipment can fail to detect an inconsistent concentration of carbon monoxide in the chamber, thus causing fully conscious animals to experience the horror of watching others suffer from convulsions and muscular spasms as they slowly die. The animals often panic and scream, struggling for air, as the gas irritates their eyes and noses. We fear that this chamber, despite whatever officials currently claim, will eventually, probably sooner rather than later, be used for the sake of convenience, as a "shortcut" for euthanizing "difficult" but manageable animals.

Please urge Metro Animal Control to provide lost, abused, and homeless animals the least they deserve: a peaceful and dignified release from an uncaring world that has deemed them "expendable." Carbon monoxide poisoning has been outlawed in California and should remain a thing of the past in Casper. Please contact Casper officials and ask that the $7,500 spent on the gas chamber be spent on group discussions with a grief specialist for euthanasia-by-injection technicians or on increasing animal control staff in order to alleviate the current staffs workload instead of taking this giant step backward.

Re:  Don't Turn on the Gas Chamber

Dear Mayor Bertoglio and Messrs. Forslund & Moore:

I was greatly distressed when I learned that the Metro Animal Control shelter in Casper, Wyoming, announced its plan to purchase a carbon monoxide gas chamber to "kill vicious, aggressive, wild, or rabid animals."

Currently, the method of euthanasia at the shelter is lethal injection, which, if done properly, is by far the most humane method.

Animal control director Mike Moore falsely claimed that gassing is safer and cheaper than intravenous injection. On the contrary, even the best carbon monoxide equipment can fail to detect an inconsistent concentration of carbon monoxide in the chamber, thus, cause fully conscious animals to experience the horror of watching others suffer from convulsions and muscular spasms as they slowly die. The animals often panic and scream,  struggling for air, as the gas irritates their eyes and noses. I am fearful that this chamber, despite whatever officials currently claim, will be used for the sake of convenience, as a "shortcut" for euthanizing "difficult" but manageable animals.

Carbon monoxide poisoning has been outlawed in California and should remain a thing of the past in Casper. Please suggest that Casper officials that the $7,500 spent on the gas chamber be spent on group discussions with a grief specialist for euthanasia-by-injection technicians, and/or for increasing the animal control staff to diminish the staffs workload instead of taking this barbaric step backward.

Please urge Metro Animal Control to provide lost, abused, and homeless animals the very least they deserve: a peaceful and dignified release from an uncaring world that has deemed them "expendable."

Thank you for your prompt attention to this urgent matter.

Sincerely,
