HELP RESCUE
2 MONKEYS FROM RESEARCH
Update

We regret to inform everyone that before we were able to get the 2 rhesus monkeys from the research facility another Dr. requested them and they had to be sent back into research. While we are deeply saddened by this, we are elated by the fact that they have another monkey that can be released. Thelma is a 22 year old stumptail. We have not yet been able to obtain a release date.

Unlike the rhesus monkeys which needed an enclosure of their own, we are hopeful that Thelma will be accepted in an enclosure with Detroit and Neeko, two very good natured male pigtails, who enjoy grooming the females in the next enclosure through the wire separation. Whenever an enclosure is shared by both males and females, the males are vasectomized. In the event that this plan does not work out and the monkeys cannot be kept together a smaller enclosure can be built next to the pigtail enclosure where she will at least have them for company.

Since winter is rapidly approaching we can not put Thelma outside until warmer weather arrives. She has been kept in a climate controlled facilty, and she will need to be taught how to go into the monkey house when temperatures warrant. A large cage will be purchased and she will be kept in the heated volunteer building throughout the winter.

We would like to thank everyone that helped in any way with raising the funds to release the 2 rhesus from research.

Anyone that donated specifically for the rhesus enclosure, as promised will have their donation returned.

If your donation specified that it could be used for the sanctuary your donation will be used to benefit all of the monkeys currently residing at the sanctuary.

We understand that there were alot of caring people who would have liked to have made a donation, but due to the holidays approaching and the economy were not able to at this time. It is not always possible to get a grant or to get one in time. In order to be able to respond faster in the future when the need arises a Building Fund is now being set up. Anyone wishing to donate to this ongoing fund, please indicate that the donation is for the Building Fund. If your donation is being made as a gift, just indicate where you would like a notification sent. Hopefully, in the future this will be able to get a monkey to sanctuary before being turned back into research again.

In the near future we are hoping to be able to publish an online monthly newsletter. Anyone interested in subscribing please email [email protected].

We will keep everyone updated on the release of Thelma.

Thank you.

A research facility has contacted Mindy's Memory Primate Sanctuary in Oklahoma regarding the release of two 13-year-old male rhesus monkeys. The director of the sanctuary, Linda Barcklay, would like to take these monkeys in and it needs to be done immediately.  We are working with the research facility to keep these monkeys from being sent back into research.

Currently there are 36 residents at Mindys Sanctuary, 7 of them being former research. The sanctuary does not have any more space without building another cage. Other sanctuaries were approached by the research facility and turned them down.

Because this is happening at the end of the year,  organizations that could help in the form of a grant to build the enclosure do not have any funds available. Many monkeys never make it out of research and we desperately want to help these two.

If you can send a donation for this project we will appreciate it very much. Normally Mindy's would not try to raise funds in this manner, however this is an URGENT situation. Construction costs will be approximately $8,000.00. If we cannot raise the amount needed, the funds WILL BE RETURNED to you. If you would like the funds to be used to benefit the residents already at the sanctuary in the event the enclosure CANNOT be built please indicate this when you make your donation.

If you are sending a donation, please email to let us know so we can get an idea as to whether we can save these sweet innocents.  Thank you very much.
