Dear :

Please add my voice to those who are opposed to Ingham County Animal Control  which is involved with the practice of "pound seizure" -- selling unclaimed shelter animals to animal dealers and research facilities.

When a shelter sells its homeless animals, statistics point to an increase in the theft of dogs and cats. This is due to a profit motive to sell animals. No one can be certain their own beloved companion will never fall into the hands of researchers as long as animals from pounds are allowed to be sold to researchers.

If people in Ingham County see a wandering cat or dog they are less inclined to either catch the cat or dog or call animal control to pick-up the wandering pet if they know that there is a very good chance that the cat or dog might end up in a research facility.

Every citizen of your county should know that the animal control is selling former pets to dealers and research facilities.  If they knew this they would be steadfastly opposed to this practice.

For the above reasons, I strongly urge you to immediately ban the sale of homeless and abandoned animals to research facilities.  Personal reasons should not be the motive for allowing pound seizure to continue.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

-Your Name-
The October 4th meeting of the Law and Courts committee of the Ingham County Board of Commissioners (ICBC) did not go well for the cats and dogs that depend on the county's animal control facility to reunite them with their former owners or to help them find new homes.

The committee voted 3 - 2 to recommend that the ICBC support an amendment that will allow both the three class B dealers in Michigan and biomedical research institutions within 200 miles of the county seat to purchase animals from the animal control facility.
