TRANSCRIBED INTERVIEW WITH LUIS ALANDY a An exclusive chat with primetime drama actor Luis Alandy a Conducted by Valerie V. Mayuga Sometime September 2002, at Discovery Suites
Q: Okay…Luis Alandy…Can you give me your full name? A: Ah, real name?
Q: Yes. And screen name. Want to go with screen name first? A: It’s Luis Alandy. And my real name’s Adrian Luis Alandy.
Q: How old are you? A: I’m 22 years old.
Q: Describe yourself in 3 words A: Three words? Um…simple, what else…friendly, and a…what’s the other word? (loooong pause…) and I’m serious (laughs).
Q: Where could we see you right now? A: Where? Regular shows, Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggang, then guestings in ABS-CBN shows. Basically, that’s all.
Q: Um, your character in Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggang. Can you describe him? A: Yeah, I play the role of Clarence, who was once a suitor of Claudine Baretto in the show, but now I’m with Matette de Leon. My character there is, parang…ano ako dun e…parang…anong tawag…parang martyr type na guy…a family guy, a very like me guy (chuckling).
Q: In what ways are you like your character? A: Well, one is, ano, very ano siya…very martyr pag dating sa love
Q: Martyr ka pag dating sa love… A: Mejo…haha…wag nyo na tanungin kung ano yung mg pinagkamartyr ko dahil mahaba yung storya.
Q: No, I don’t think we’ll go into that. A: Okay, okay. Then, um, ano siya, eh very silent siya. Not naman the really silent type, but, ah, you know, speaks whenever he needs to. Something like that.
Q: How long have you been in showbiz? A: I’ve been in the showbiz world for like, ABS-CBN, mga two years na. Tapos GMA – I started with GMA, for two years din, then ABS-CBN, two years.
Q: How did you get started in the biz? What attracted you to it? A: My…well, it wasn’t really my choice to be in show business, it was my cousin’s choice. So he asked me if I could join him like, audition for the other channel, then, ayun, fortunately, ako yung nakuha…ahahaha.
Q: Instead of your cousin? A: Instead of my cousin.
Q: Fate, noh? A: ahahaha! Then yeah, I started off from there, and right now, ayun, swerte swerte.
Q: Claim to fame. When did you start getting known? A: Um…I think…yung talagang ma-ano sa tao, talaga ung Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggang, pero I started yata sa Pangako Sa Yo, dun ako nakilala, e. Dun, a, nakita nung mga ano, yung, may potential pala siya, or he has talent, something like that.
Q: You played who’s character in Pangako Sa Yo? A: David. A love triangle (composed of) of Kristine (Hermosa) and Jericho (Rosales) at the beginning of the story.
Q: What do you love about showbiz? A: Well…a, the…ahahaha, the money (chuckling). One is of course, you learn a lot, pero of course, you have to work hard for what you’re earning. Tapos, um…partly, the fame. Um, nakakatulong din sa iba-ibang mga bagay, mga vip-vip treatment…ahahaha…then, yung maraming nakikilalang friends, and, you know…
Q: Who are some of your closest showbiz friends? A: Showbiz friends? Raffy (Rafael Roselle), a, who else, I have a lot, e. There’s too many. Tapos sa show namin, sila Claudine. Claudine is a very good friend. Matet, ah, Jericho, Carlos…
Q: Ups and downs of being in the business? A: Ups, is, ano…um, mga ups sa showbiznes, well, a, yun, yun nga, yung marami kang nakikilalang mga tao, yung marami kang napapasaya. Yung, pag napapatawa or napapaiyak …basta, in what you do, in what they see sa TV. Downs? Siguro now I have really no time for family and friends sometimes, when you get so busy…wala talaga, So ayun, minsan, you get to be, you know, you feel so depressed most of the time, kasi hindi mo na nakikita yung family mo for like, how many, for like a month or so.
Q: So you get depressed over this. You’re very close to your family? A: Um…yeah.
Q: Who are you closest to? A: Mmmm…kasi, even now…every family naman nagkakaroon ng problems, pero, lahat talaga, I’m close to. I’m close to my mom, to my dad, to my sister, kasi lima kaming magkakapatid, four boys, tapos sister, yun, isa lang yung girl, bunso pa. So, close ako sa kanya, siya yung pinaka, parang inaalagaan ko.
Q: What’s a regular day like in Luis Alandy’s life? A: If I don’t have work, when I wake up sa umaga, kasi ano ako, e, umaga ako nagigising, I mean, light sleeper ako, eh. Kahit I sleep late, I wake up around nine or ten, earlier minsan. So ayun, um, I just go to the gym, tapos in the afternoon, I hook up with friends, or just eat outside, play basketball minsan, or watch movies. So yun.
Q: So, that’s how you relax? A: Yeah, that’s how I relax
Q: So how else do you relax, unwind? A: Um, well, just with friends, just having fun with them…watch movies, or go out of town, or play basketball.
Q: Where do you usually hang-out? A: Malls.
Q: Mall rat? A: ahaha, yeah…mejo. Kasi wala, e. Wala akong magawa. I mean yun lang naman napupuntahan dito sa manila, e.
Q: How about gimiking? A: I’m not the type of person na lumalabas-labas talaga every night, pero, minsan talaga, lumalabas ako. I don’t drink and I don’t smoke, so that makes me a boring person, as they say.
Q: You guys are a dying breed. A: HAHAHAHA!
Q: Okay, wait, when you go out, do you get recognized a lot? A: Yeah.
Q: So how do you deal with that? How do you feel about it? A: Well, you smile at them, you know. When people recognize you, you say hi, or you know, you smile at them…it’s a big thing to them. Kasi…sila yung…kung wala naman sila, wala ka rin e, so, kung baga, if you get noticed, if you get, ano, parang nabati ka nila, just, turn back the favor, say hi, smile at them. Wala naman, you don’t have to be, like, feeling artista talaga na di ka mamamansin. You don’t have to be like that. I mean, personally, me, ako, hindi ako ganun.
Q: Have you ever been asked for your autograph? A: Yeah. A lot. And pictures din…ehehe.
Q: So you like it. A: And handshakes. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I make them happy! I give a smile to their faces, so yun…that’s the good thing about it.
Q: Likes and dislikes? A: Ahhh…In a person?
