For Polo, she’s a Starbucks Coffee Frappucino, while to Alessandra, he’s a refreshing glass of Coke. It’s no surprise that when it comes to describing each other as drinks, both have chosen caffeine-loaded beverages – they both seem to be supplying each other with an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm which doesn’t seem to run out.

They met in 2001 on the set of GMA 7’s Biglang Sibol, Bayang Impasibol where Polo and Alessandra were put together as a love-team. The rest, as they say, is history. No, it wasn’t a love-at-first-sight, all-about-chemistry kind of thing, but rather, theirs is a story of friendship blossoming into romance. “’Di kami nagpapansinan niyan, eh,” Polo relates, referring to how it was before they became good friends. “Minsan…konti lang. Nag-aasaran kami, ganun.” When asked why, Alex was quick to answer. “Di ko siya type!” to which Polo countered, “Eh di ko rin siya type! …Eh ano, ah, basta bigla na lang naging close kami…We go out, pinupuntahan niya ako sa tapingwala naman siyang eksena. Parang aalis lang kami, nagpapasama…Tapos parang nadevelop.” A bet during a pool game allowed Polo to tell her how he really felt. “Niloko ko siya,” said Polo. “Sabi kong ganun, ‘O sige, pag nanalo ako…sa bilyar namin – pustahan – magiging tayo. Kapag hindi, kapag talo, hindi na. Ganun nagstart. Eh…” “Ako confident ako na mananalo ako,” explained Alessandra. “Eh natalo siya,” continues Polo. “Pero di parin…naging kami. Pero dun nag-start. Wondering how they exactly fell together? Apparently, just like any other guy in love, Polo took all chances and bared his soul to Alessandra as he expressed to her how he really felt. “Sabi niya, kung di man maging kami, sana makahanap siya ng katulad ko,” shares Alex. “Pero wala siyang magagawa kasi nag-iisa lang ako. Dun ako…parang, ang sweet naman nito!” So on December 14, 2001, both bid single life good-bye and welcomed coupledom into their lives.

Alessandra’s what-you-see-is what-you-get attitude has, just as always, stirred mixed reactions from people, and included in this list are people’s reactions toward her and Polo at the onset their relationship. Apparently, in the beginning, a lot didn’t exactly react positively towards their relationship. According to Polo, “Actually nung start, yung mga ibang tao, parang, di silang ganong sang-ayon sa relationship namin… I don’t know…because, parang, akala nila bad girl yun (Alessandra) kasi maingay, magulo, makulit, ganun…mataray…” So if Alex appears to be a bad girl, does that make Polo a ‘good boy?’ “Hindi naman,” he says. As Alessandra put it, “…Sa kanya, hindi halata, na bad boy pala siya. Ako naman, hindi nila makita yung good side sa akin.” But, fate, as they say, is not without it’s sense of irony, and while it initially appeared that Polo and Alex didn’t exactly seem right for each other in the beginning, anyone who sees them together at present wouldn’t picture either of them with anyone else.

High from the mere presence of each other, it’s seeing couples like Alessandra and Polo that make people want to get into, if not appreciate, relationships. So if you think reel-life love teams give you the tingles, think again, and try real-life love for a change.
