Diet and Exercize in the News
updated Feb 2006

We'll try to keep this somewhat current, adding new articles as they break (and we catch them).  Please help us know if new articles arise that you want links to, or if one of the existing links goes dead. Thanks! [email protected]

All viewpoints and perspectives are welcomed and wanted.  This is simply a news forum for issues concerning health, exercize and weight loss. The following articles and topics do not represent the viewpoint of Babyzone.com or the Plus Sized Mommies board --they are just news items being shared for your consideration. It is a good idea to read all sides on an issue and make your own informed and educated choices.

Dangerous supplements: Still at large
The much touted "natural" sweetener Splenda is now being looked at more carefully...and more skeptically. Its manufacturers refer to it as natural, but chemical treatment with chlorine actually qualifies the product as an artificial sweetener.
Research on Splenda showed that sucralose caused shrunken thymus glands (up to 40% shrinkage) and enlarged liver and kidneys, and some vision problems are being found as well.
Much can be found on the topic online, but one such article is

Soy - Good Or Bad?
Once thought to be a miracle food with the ability to bring longevity and fight cancer, soy is now being studied more closely and actually found to be a cause of certain cancers and thryoid problems, as well as other health issues such as infertility and peanut allergies . The use of soy in infant formulas is especially being looked at currently by the FDA, as it is believed to possibly cause developmental problems in some babies.
A small amount of soy is still believed to be
highly beneficial, but anything more than that is being found to be hazardous, and many North Americans are exceeding the recommended amount in order to follow what they feel to be a healthy eating program.
Much info is to be found online, and you can read many sides to the issue and decide for yourself. But you must read carefully because most of the heavily pro-soy articles are on soy-product-selling sites or holistic food sites, not government, medical or research sites. Other sites are outdated and have not been updated.  Here are some articles about the current concerns that are surfacing..
