For many years tramping and climbing were the ruling passions of my life. This painting is based on photographs I took in the 1950’s. It is a recollection of being on the main divide of the Southern Alps in deteriorating weather and looking down to the coast where we could clearly see the waves and houses of Gillespies Beach. It seemed a place of wonderful safety and comfort and I had a great desire to be there and not up in the mountains in a storm. It was over forty years before I eventually did get to Gillespies Beach. |
