When I was a child I loved looking through my mother’s album of postcards from her fiancé who had served in France in the first world war. There were photographs of uniformed boys in the trenches at the front. I knew survivors of that war when they were middle aged men. Now as memories of them fade all that is left are statues of young soldiers on crumbling monuments in the landscapes of their youth.
While this was an impetus for me to paint Monument, any meaning and interpretation can only be made by each individual viewer.
Although it is an imaginary scene, elements of this painting come from Ruapehu, Raetihi and Waipukurau.
