This painting is not an accurate description of any known city. It is an amalgam of many elements from my home city of Auckland which was founded in the nineteenth century by British settlers on an isthmus of land between two oceans. The dormant volcanic cones which dot this isthmus were terraced and fortified by the original Maori inhabitants and the clouds are typical of the skies over the city. |
