A PLACE TO STAND  -
--Acrylic on board . 1120mm x 1640mm . Dunedin Public Art Gallery collection . © Peter Siddell 1978

This painting has been included in a number of exhibitions in New Zealand Art Museums including Two Centuries of New Zealand Landscape Art at the Auckland City art Gallery in 1990 and The Dream Collectors which was the opening exhibition of painting and sculpture at Te Papa, The Museum of New Zealand in 1998. I have included an excerpt from the catalogue of that exhibition:

"Siddell's minutely detailed landscapes and townscapes suggest absolute accuracy of observation, but are amalgams intended to suggest an ideal, rather than an actual, reality. Here, the Latin inscription on the mirrored building runs counter to the timeless clarity of this immaculate, imaginary city. It is from Virgil's Georgics (iii.284), and translates as 'Meanwhile time is flying, flying never to return.' Peter Siddell aims for evenness and cool stillness in his paintings."
