  PROFILE

The growing demand for irrigation water in the face of increasingly limited supply of water in the past decades highlights the importance of management input in the use of irrigation water. Learning such development, Andalas University has since 1982 been involved in various efforts trying to improve the performance of irrigation systems in, particularly, West Sumatra province.

At the beginning, such researchers were executed by a group of teaching staff of Andalas University loosely organized in what was known as "Kelompok Kerja Irigasi Universitas Andalas (Irrigation Working Group of Andalas University) or in Indonesian abbreviation, KKI-Unand. KKI-Unand became Pusat Studi Irigasi-Universitas Andalas or PSI-Unand on July 4, 1989 through the issuance of the decision of the Rector of Andalas University No.562/XIV/A/Unand/1989. Furthermore, Since the issues of irrigation water has grown widely and related with other resources, in 1998, the name of center is changed became The Center for Irrigation, Water Resources, Land and Development or in Indonesia abbreviation called PSISDALP Unand.

The Center is an autonomous and self-supporting institution within the bailiwick of Andalas University. The core personnel of PSI consist of teaching staff of the Andalas University. Some free lance researchers, depending on the needs, may work with the Center on a contractual basis.

OBJECTIVE

PSISDALP-Unand aims at helping the government in formulating and implementing policies, especially in the area of irrigation, water resources, land and development problems. In doing so, PSISDALP-Unand enhances the ideas that perceive the target beneficiaries more as the subjects of the policies rather than merely as the objects. Involving these beneficiaries in the processes of development is deemed as a consequence of the perception, and, inevitably, something that PSISDALP-Unand is striving for.

PROGRAM

To fulfill those objectives, PSISDALP-Unand strives to carry out the following tasks:

  • Conducting researches, be they pure, applied, or action, relevant to irrigation development.
  • Conducting training supportive to efforts in irrigation development, as well as in agricultural development in general.
  • Administering and / or participating in seminars and workshops, as an effort to disseminate the findings of the researches executed by PSISDALP-Unand.
  • Facilitating other research institutions or individuals in executing researches that are of the interests of PSISDALP-Unand.

GRADUATE PROGRAM (M.Sc. in INRM)

MASTER DEGREE in
INTEGRATED NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT (INRM)

  BACKGROUND

The Integrated Natural Resources Management (INRM) Study Program has emerged from the need to study natural resources management from integrated perspective for sustainable development. This has been a response to develop and impart knowledge and skills necessary to deal with the realities of natural resources management in Asian countries which are facing conditions of degradation. The continuing trend of natural resources degradation has been threatening sustainability of these resources, productivity and quality of life of present and future generations, particularly the poor.
There are a number of major issues of natural resources management in Asian countries. On the outset, it was commonly felt that natural resources degradation in Asia (South and Southeast Asia) is going on at alarming level and this is true for all kind of natural resources, from sanctuary, forest, upland, river basin and water resources, and down to coastal resources.
All of the issues mentioned above indicated that natural resources management could not be managed from a single perspective and interest. The issue then is how to manage natural resources in an integrated manner so that there is a balance between use and conservation. To this, capacity building in integrated natural resources management is an urgent need.
For this purpose, Graduate Program Andalas University, in cooperation with the Asian Institute of Technology and the support from the Ford Foundation, initiates a Master Degree Program in Integrated Natural Resources Management (INRM). INRM draws on and integrates theories and perspectives in established disciplines of rural regional development, ecology, economics, laws, and development planning into a distinctive framework of problems, issues, and questions concerning balancing the use and conservation of natural resources. The INRM study program, therefore, is an interdisciplinary in subject foci and approach.
