with me, thanks. Part One: Episode Begins: Teaser- (fade in from black) DAWN: You stopped me, Buffy, back then, when it happened. I froze when you . . . decided to go in my place. (beat) You were wrong. BUFFY [gasping]: Wrong? DAWN: Yes. You . . . you were NEEDED, Buffy. (beat) I wasn't. (fade out)
GLORY: (briskly) Okay. Small talk over. I'm in a bit of a crunch here, so let's cut right to the ooey gooey center. Your sister, the Slayer, has my key. It's mine, I want it. DAWN: (nervously) I'm not sure. What does it look like? GLORY: (smiles fondly, puts hands over her heart) Well... (walks a few steps away, gets nostalgic) the last time I caught a peep ... it was a bright green swirly shimmer. Really brought out the blue in my eyes. (annoyed) But then those sneaky little monks pulled an abracadabra, so now it could look like anything… (fade out)
(Cut to Scene from Season 6, Episode 15) BUFFY: What did you want? DAWN: (softly) Nothing. BUFFY: Dawn, come on. DAWN: No. You don't KNOW! You have this thing you do. You have all these friends. (softly) You have no idea what it's like. BUFFY: What are you talking about? I don't know what, what- DAWN: Being alone! (Next Scene) Cut-to: New York, Apartment, Dawn’s Room, Day Cut to: DAWN: Another day for myself, Uhh? (saying sarcastically and putting her hand on the glass) (camera pulls back to a letter on her dresser and holds for about ten or so seconds) it reads: Dawn,

Guest Starring: Special Guest Star: (Next Scene) Miami, Street, Day: Cut to: Taxi cab (Willow and Buffy talking in back seat) WILLOW: So, I’ve been looking into why my familiar is…well dead. It turns out she’s been dead for the past four years. (pause) I never met her before, like when there was Tara’s kitty (pausing, looking down) I miss her. BUFFY: And she’s just now showing up. WILLOW: (looking back up) Well I think…she was kind of lost.
(Dawn walking down a street shuffling her feet, camera pans up to a building, we see a Woman in a white dress looking down at Dawn walking by herself and scene fades)
Cut to: WILLOW: Tell me why again Spike had to go all the way to Seattle? BUFFY: He said something about a OLD fling and a curse, blah-blah (shrugs) It should only take a week, tops. (Willow and Buffy slow there pace to the desk, Buffy looks a little sad) BUFFY: It’ll be ok, I mean we’ve been apart longer…at times. WILLOW: (rubs Buffy’s arm a little) I’m sure he can take care of himself, just like Andrew and his (making quotes) “friend” moving to Paris. (Moving to the desk, Buffy pulls out a slip from her purse and hands it to the desk clerk) BUFFY: Yeah, it’s gonna be kinda weird with out mister-trekie-lord-of-the-rings-man not being around. (Willow glances at the available rooms and there prices) WILLOW: Are you sure we can afford to stay here? (with a puzzled look) BUFFY: I’m sure Will, with the school going well and Giles helping out, we have more than enough. WILLOW: Well, ok, but lets at least stay somewhere on the first few floors. I’m really getting tired of standing in the elevator sooo much. (sounding a little whiney) BUFFY: Sure, lets see what they have. (Leaving Buffy and Willow talking with the desk clerk, camera pans back to Xander and Giles walking in the doors with the luggage) Cut to: WILLOW: (whispers to Faith) So tell me, what’s so secretive that you needed to talk with Kennedy earlier? FAITH: (to Willow, whispering) Someone’s birthday coming up? WILLOW: ohh, ok. (whispers back) Didn’t hear a thing. FAITH: (giving a wink to Willow) Yeah Sure. BUFFY: uhh guys, can we please go to the rooms now? (receiving a key from the desk clerk) XANDER: Yea, I gotta see whats on ESPN and then get to the beach, (with a big grin) babes await. (as the group moves toward the elevators, the hotel lights dim a bit and start to flicker. Buffy looks from Willow to Giles and then to Xander (shrugs), Kennedy nudges into Willow, Faith looks over at Buffy) WILLOW: (glancing at everyone) It wasn’t me! BUFFY: It’s ok Will, we need to get to our room and then… (Camera pans to the direction Buffy is looking, the Woman seen from earlier is standing in the lobby of the hotel looking at Buffy) WOMAN: (walking slowly to Buffy and is a few feet away from the group when she starts to talk) On the eve of her true birth, the trials of the chosen will begin and be judged (pause), the Life of the Earth is weakening, (looking only at Buffy) she alone holds the balance of the dimensions and the power to hold them together. (a small smile grows) you and her have much ahead of you, be watchful, (pausing, looking more intent) be strong, (reaching for Buffy and taking her hand), for she is fragile and the life and power she holds will be temptful to give into the darkness that surrounds her. (Buffy stares at the Woman for a minute, then looks at the group, who are staring also) (a light glow forms around the Woman and she fades away, Buffy looks around seeing no one else has noticed the Woman) XANDER: Ok, what was that about? KENNEDY: It sounds like something bad is coming, (looking at Buffy) again. WILLOW: Ok, so apocalypsey?
(Next Scene) Miami, Hotel Room, Day: Cut to: FAITH: Ok, so this woman, the Woman in White, (pause) was saying something about this Life of the Earth. Who, (pause) What does she or it even look like? Where do we even start? BUFFY: Well we know that she’s “the Life of the Earth” and the Woman did say “she”, what ever that means. (looking out a window) GILES: Well as factual as that sounds… there are many demons and gods that say there “the Life of the Earth”…among other things… WILLOW: (looking at Giles) True, but that Woman also said that she’s the balance of the dimensions. KENNEDY: yeah, she also said something about a trial for the chosen on the eve of her true birth. So this other woman…the one we need to find… WILLOW: (glancing at Kennedy) Yes, We need to find this woman first. (looking at Buffy)…hmm…we don’t have many clues. BUFFY: (gives a shrug and then looks a little sad) We’ll find out, we always do. I just hope it’s not, (pausing) fight this demon thingy to save the world or something. (beat) Cuz, that’s really getting old. GILES: Well as that might be a possibility, I think we should cancel this job and come back to it later. We really need to get back to New York and prepare the other slayers, (pause) if something like that is coming, we need to be ready. FAITH: (glancing at Buffy) I hate to say it, but I’ll have to agree with G-man on that. WILLOW: (looking depressed) You know, I’m afraid that’s what we need to do. KENNEDY: What? We just got here. XANDER: Yeah. (with a small smile) I still haven’t gone down to the beach yet. (Faith gets up from the table and picks up a bag from the bed, smiles lightly at Xander, when he watches her get up) BUFFY: (looking from Giles to Willow) XANDER: (sheepish grin) Chicks’ here I come. WILLOW: (patting Xander on the back) Calm down boy. Breathe.
(Cut to: Several fly over shots of New York City) (Next Scene)New York; Mall Shop, Day: Cut to: DAWN: No…It’s just that I thought I was a Scooby…and that meant I was more…involved. SARA: True, that’s what I was thinking too. DAWN: It’s…I’m miss bookworm or something and they don’t even… (A musical tone is heard, Dawn sees Sara pulling out a cell phone) SARA: Hello? ...oh hi mom, (to Dawn) Just a sec (back to the phone) yeah mom just shopping …what…no…I just thought…fine…no I’ll get a cab…alright bye. DAWN: Have to leave? SARA: Yeah, dad is in town…be home for dinner...blah…blah…(hugging
Dawn) Call me later tonight, ok? (Sara leaves, Dawn returns to looking a clothes on the racks) Cut to: DAWN: Sorry. WOMAN: (smiling) You have much ahead of you. (standing back a bit) My dear, you’ve all grown up. (beat) Dawn: (looking a little scared and looking around and noticing no one else is seeing the Woman) Who, who are you? WOMAN/GUARDIAN: I am the Guardian of Light, I am your guide through these trials. DAWN: What trials? I am I the only one that can see you? (looking around) GUARDIAN: Yes, for now, if I choose not to show anyone else. DAWN: What do you want? Cuz I don’t know or do anything special? GUARDIAN: (puts a hand on Dawns shoulder and smiles) That’s not entirely true. You have more power than you possible know. As you are the Key. DAWN: How do you know what I am? GUARDIAN: There is a lot that I know, one is why you are hiding from your true-self? DAWN: (looking at guardian surprised) (the guardian just smiles) DAWN: What’s so special about me? GUARDIAN: There is a lot to understand, I will help you when the time is right…I must go for now, the trials of the chosen are beginning but I will be back. DAWN: Wait, trials of the Chosen, does that mean Slayers? GUARDIAN: Yes (nodding) DAWN: (a little worried) What kind of trial? GUARDIAN: (beginning to fade) I do not know until the time it is shown. (Dawn looking around to see if anyone noticed her talking to herself)
(Willow, Faith and Buffy in one row, Giles, Kennedy and Xander in the row behind, other passengers a talking quietly) FAITH: So you said earlier that you may have an answer to why your familiar is a ghost? WILLOW: Well, I’ve been researching that. I never saw her true self until…tapping into her past…what I found is not entirely pleasant (looks over at Buffy) BUFFY: What do you mean by that…Will what’s the problem? WILLOW: (looking a little sad) Well her true name is Dark Dawn…I most likely would have called her sunshine or blackie or something like that… BUFFY: (looking puzzled) That’s a interesting name…wait she like…died four years ago? FAITH: Why? What happened four years ago? WILLOW: (looks at Faith then to Buffy) That’s when the monks sent you Dawn. I found out that they had to tap into Tara’s and my power, along with my familiar’s to help create her. FAITH: Take a step back, Dawn was created by some cat that died? WILLOW: My familiar…she sacrificed her flesh and mortality to Dawn…that’s all, just her soul and energy is what’s left…so she gave Dawn her life in this dimension. BUFFY: Are sure will? That…it… it was a choice? WILLOW: (nodding) Yes…she told me…but the good news is she gets to be with me again, and… well Dawn’s still here, so all in well. BUFFY: Still, it seems so spooky that there’s not more too this… (close up of Buffy) FAITH VO: I’m sure if something else happens, that we’ll be able to deal. (flash back) BUFFY: When he bailed on us ... I remember, Dawn cried for a week. Except she didn't. She wasn't there, but ... I can still feel what it was like. (Giles puts his hand over his mouth and frowns) BUFFY: They sent her to me, Giles. I think ... I have to take care of her. I want to. GILES: Do we tell the others? BUFFY: No. No one. They-they'd act weird around her, and it's, it's safer for everyone if they don't know. (fade out)
Cut to: Apartment, Dawn’s room, Afternoon) (Dawn, entering the room, puts down her bag on the bed then walks over to her closet and pulls out a shoe box. Opening the box we see some burnt books) DAWN: Why again did I burn these? (mumbles to herself) (flash back) (Cut to: Dawn storming back into her room, crying. She slams the door, looks around, and begins to trash her room, shrieking. She shoves stuff off the desk, shoves books off the shelves, tears posters off the walls. She picks up one of her diaries and flips through it, then begins to tear out pages, throws them in the wastebasket, then throws the whole book in. Extended sequence of Dawn ripping pages out of diaries, throwing the pages and the diaries into the wastebasket.) (end flashback) Cut to:
Cut to: FAITH: So, anyone hungry? WILLOW: (rubbing her stomach) I could go for some pizza? XANDER: Sounds good to me, airplane food just doesn’t work for me… Cut to: BUFFY: (raised eyebrow) Do you guy’s feel that? FAITH: Yeah, you Kennedy? KENNEDY: (looking at Faith and nodding) Umm, Yes. WILLOW: (slowly walking to the three) What’s wrong guy’s? FAITH: It’s hard describe, but if I could put it into words, it feels like I’m stuck but I’m not… Cut to: Cut to: BUFFY: (looking around, everyone but Xander, Willow, Kennedy, Faith and herself have frozen in place) This can’t be good.
Cut to: GUARDIAN: Your first trial is here for the three of you, One is strong, One is alone. Cut to: BUFFY: (looking a little worried) uhh Xander, you and Will hide somewhere! WILLOW: (glancing from the demons to the slayers) Are you sure, maybe I could do a spell or something? KENNEDY: Sorry hon, but this trial is for us. Get somewhere safe. This is nothing. (nodding to the approaching demons) BUFFY: Ok, (thinking) one were alone (still trying to move) ohh, we have to think and break apart as one. FAITH: (glancing at Buffy then to Kennedy and back) Are you sure thatal work? BUFFY: Do you have any ideas? FAITH: Ok, (shrugs) on three lets break and kill these guys. KENNEDY: One…two…three… Cut to: Cut to: Cut to: Cut to: BUFFY: Well that was interesting. FAITH: That’s IT? GUARDIAN: You have completed your first trial. Well done. (a bright flash and time is reset, airport noise fills the air)
Cut to: GILES: (glancing at the three slayers) BUFFY: Yeah, you just missed are first trial. GILES: Ohh. (takes his glasses off) FAITH: (giving Kennedy a high five) uhh yea, aced it with flying colors! BUFFY: Well, I think its more of a pass or fail type but…all is good. (Xander and Willow move to join the Slayers and Giles) XANDER: There sure where demons flying. WILLOW: What was it with them just… just disappearing? BUFFY: I don’t know, we should look in to that. (Faith and Kennedy just shrug) KENNEDY: (rubbing her stomach) Great now I’m starving. (they continue walking through the corridor) (fade out) Act 2; Scene 3: (Next Scene) New York, Apartment, Early Night Cut to: Cut to: GILES: (removing his glass to clean) I just don’t see that nine demons attacking in a crowded airport can go unnoticed? BUFFY: (looking at Giles as they enter the building) It looked like time just stopped after…she appeared. FAITH: Yeah I saw people frozen… I looked out the window and airplanes were frozen in mid-air, that kinda freaked me out. XANDER: (walking up the steps to join them) Which brings us to the question, why didn’t Willow and I get stuck like everyone else? GILES: (thinking hard, rubbing the bridge of his nose) Well maybe to how close you were or that the Woman choose not to, there are a lot factors.
BUFFY: Well if that happens again id not like to have that weird feeling again (walking into the waiting area, noticing Dawn sitting on the couch) cause that was just…Dawn, why are you up this late? DAWN: (slowly approaching Buffy) I take it you guys passed the first trial? Cut to: BUFFY: (looking puzzled) How did you know anything about that?
Cut to: GILES: Was she wearing a long white dress? (Dawn nodded) XANDER: With long blonde hair? (Dawn nods again) BUFFY: (looking at Giles) The Key doesn’t work anymore, what does this have to do with Dawn? Any of it? Cut to: KENNEDY: (changing into pajamas) Well today has sure tired me out. WILLOW: (moving into bed) Yep, today has been interesting. (Kennedy moves up next to Willow, putting an arm around, giving her a quick kiss, than closing her eyes) WILLOW: (yhaning) Lets try to get some sleep tonight ok. (smiling, then closing her eyes) Cut to: GILES: (taking his glasses off to clean) Well I’m not entirely certain that the Key is not usable again to open a portal, but there is still energy within Dawn that could be usable in the wrong hands. BUFFY: (looking at Giles) You have never said anything more about the Key and if there was any power left? DAWN: How do you think I feel, I’m the one that’s the Key. (Buffy looks a little sad) GILES: (looking at Dawn then to Buffy) Well, we have known that evil forces are always seeking the Key. BUFFY: Still, I thought we were all passed this. (putting her face in her hands) FAITH: (looking over at Giles) The Guardian said that “she alone will hold the balance of the dimensions”, doesn’t that mean Dawn, I mean, doesn’t she hold the power to open a doorway to every dimension. GILES: Well that could be a logical conclusion, but we just don’t know any facts to this, the Key was never meant to be human and…live. XANDER: (looking over at Dawn) She going to be alright? Right? BUFFY: (putting an arm around Dawn) GILES: That might be helpful, I’ll see what I can find… Cut to: GUARDIAN: (with a gentle smile) The darkness grows around the Life of the Earth, (beat) but her family holds strong. BUFFY: (standing up) This Life of the Earth…is it…Dawn (motioning to her)…the Key. GUARDIAN: (nodding) Yes, in a sense but there is a lot more too it, the Key is human and is old enough now to have the power released. The trials will determine how much will be given unto her. (smiling at Dawn) BUFFY: Wait, is old enough now, why not sooner or… (looking over at Dawn; who is looking down at the ground; Buffy slowly kneels down to her)ohh, tomorrow is, (pausing) will be the day four years to the date (beat) when the monks sent you to me…isn’t it? DAWN: Yeah, I did the math when I got home from the mall earlier today. FAITH: Whoa, this trial thing is supposed to happen on her true birthday. (looking at Giles) Dawns true birthday is tomorrow? The day she was created. XANDER: I’m up for saying things just happen? FAITH: Who are You? And why are you here? GUARDIAN: (nodding at Dawn) I’m the Guardian of Light, I am here has her guide. (beat) I can not interfere with the trials or tell you when or what the trials are. But I do know that Dawn’s trials will be harder. BUFFY: (looking little angry and moves toward the Guardian) If that’s true, than I or my sister don’t want to do these trials. GUARDIAN: I’m sorry Buffy but they must happen and before tomorrow’s day ends…There is too much at stake. (the Guardian holds up her hand, the room grows bright and fades as we see Buffy and Dawn are standing in the living room of their old house back in Sunnydale, Dawn moves toward the window, it’s dark outside) DAWN: Ok, I’m into weird mode now. BUFFY: Yep its definitely weird, It looks like someone’s moving in. (walks over to some boxes of stuff at the base of the stairs) DAWN: (puzzled) That looks like Tara’s stuff. BUFFY: SO, is this your trial or mine? DAWN: If this is one of my trials, I’m at a loss. Buffy: (moving towards the stairs, motioning for Dawn to follow) Lets see what’s up stairs?
Cut to: BUFFY: (looking over at her sister) Where are you at? DAWN: How should I know? I don’t know what day it is. Or what year? BUFFY: Well granted some of Tara’s things are being unpacked down stairs. DAWN: (walking behind Buffy) You think its sometime before she died? BUFFY: (glancing into Willow and Tara’s room? And seeing them asleep, tears welling up in her eyes) I think this is sometime during the summer when I was…dead…And Willow and Tara moved in. (Short shot of Willow and Tara in bed is from Season 6, Episode 3 “After Life”, Buffy and Dawn are looking into room but we can not see inside) DAWN: (noticing Buffy starring at Willow and Tara, tears coming to her eyes as well) I thought that I cried all I could over losing Tara, I guess I was wrong. (Buffy hugs Dawn, fade out) Cut to: BUFFY: (moving to kneel in front of Dawn) Why didn’t you tell me you had so much trouble while I was gone? DAWN: (tearing up) How could I, you were brought back and then we found out you were in heaven, I mean sheesh you were always…busy. BUFFY: (standing up, hugging Dawn) I’m so sorry I wasn’t there for you when I came back. But want does this have to do with any trial? DAWN: (looking over at her younger self) Because I think that this is the night I wish I wasn’t human anymore, that I could just be the green ball of energy. Cut to: GUARDIAN: (glancing at the younger Dawn) Yes, that’s what you wished then, (looking at the older Dawn) Do you still wish it? Because you have the power within you to do it. DAWN: (shaking her head) No, no I will not, everything that’s happened from then to now I would have missed. (hugging Buffy) GUARDIAN: Good. (waving her hand up as a bright light fills the air) Cut to: GUARDIAN: (slowly fading) Your next trial is coming soon. Cut to:
Cut to: Apartment, Living Room, Early Night (Giles grabs a book from a table, Buffy, Xander, Faith sitting in different couches) XANDER: So what happened? DAWN: I had a chance to change the past, again… I didn’t. (taking a seat on the couch next to Faith) FAITH: (looking at Buffy) Buffy, there’s something deeper going on here, something hidden. BUFFY: (raising an eyebrow, looking at Faith) Like…What? FAITH: Like, for one so far these trials all have to do with principals of choice. BUFFY: Choice, like moving as one, and to change the past? FAITH: So far it looks like there’s… GILES: Well that could be a connection, (pausing) but I don’t think that’s what is going on. Cut to: KENNEDY: (Looking around) So what’s up? XANDER: (gesturing to Buffy and Dawn) These two just came back from one
of Dawn’s trials. KENNEDY: Are you guy’s ok? Why is Dawn involved? , she’s not a slayer (putting a hand on Dawn’s shoulder) sorry no affiance. DAWN: That’s ok Kennedy, I’m just the weird Key. KENNEDY: I thought that was all over with? BUFFY: Apparently there’s more to it now. FAITH: So tomorrow is when the Monks…four years ago…created Dawn…why not just leave her alone. BUFFY: Yeah, that’s what I’m saying why now …and what’s with all the suspense? (Xander comes back in with a few cans of soda, hands one to Kennedy, one to Buffy) XANDER: Just to make it interesting? GILES: (looking from a book to Buffy) Mystical powers always deal with rituals, trials and all sorts of things. That’s just how it’s been done.
Cut to: Apartment, Living Room, Night Cut to: WOMAN: Yes, Dawn’s next trial is here. BUFFY: No, no more of this, (getting up) it stops NOW. GUARDIAN: It can not, these trials must be done now, before the next day is over with, great evil is coming and this dimension is weak, the PTB can not interfere…or we would…but Dawn (beat) if her power is released and with you and the other slayer’s here …then there will be a chance to save this and every dimension. BUFFY: Isn’t their any way to give her the power without these trials? GUARDIAN: No, she has the power to destroy life itself, the trials will show us if she can handle that much responsibility. GILES: Surely this much power can’t still be within her? GUARDIAN: It is and always will be…she has the ability for much greatness. DAWN: Whoa, that can’t be me. BUFFY: (smiles lightly) Mom said that your special…important to the world…I guess she was right. But I still don’t like these trials so far. GUARDIAN: I know…but it’s for the best and well too save the world for a start. DAWN: Fine…So what’s next? (fade to black)
Cut to: GUARDIAN: Behind one of those doors lies a way back home, behind the other two doors are demon dimensions that even you can’t escape from. (Dawn looking worried) DAWN: SO, one out three? Big choices uhh? No pointers? (glancing at the guardian) GUARDIAN: Sorry Dawn, you have to choose for yourself. (Dawn slowly moves toward the left door, then stops, glances at the other two) DAWN: You know so far this really sucks! GUARDIAN: I was there when they choose to give the Key life. Some of the best things start by a single choice. Cut to: DAWN: All three of them lead to a demon dimension? Don’t they! GUARDIAN: (smiles) Yes. DAWN: Then why try and have me choose one? GUARDIAN: We must know that your choices will be questioned first before your decision is made. DAWN: Well you could have just asked. GUARDIAN: It must been shown, not questioned by word. (fade to black)
(Dawn appears back in the middle of the room, everyone looks up at her) DAWN: (smiles slowly) Hi, I guess I’m back. BUFFY: Yes, are you ok? Did you pass? DAWN: Yes I passed, it was different that’s for sure. XANDER: What got musical doors or something. (Dawn gets wide eyes) KENNEDY: Mystery door’s uhh? (takes a seat next to Faith) XANDER: At least it wasn’t pick a card. BUFFY: This is just getting tiresome…Giles is there anything new about the Key that could help. GILES: (removing his glasses) I’m sorry Buffy…we just don’t have much on the Key and were it came from…so forth… XANDER: Maybe Willow could help with that?
BUFFY: I didn’t think of that…I’ll ask her when she gets up.
Cut to: GUARDIAN: The next trial of the Chosen and of the Life of the Earth is here. (glances at Giles) You are of council, you are not needed for this trial but you might be helpful. (the guardian waves her hand over all of the group, fade to white)
Cut to: FAITH: (glancing around) Ok, this just gets better and crazier. XANDER: Sheesh, It must be over 150 degrees out here. (moves over to a burned tree for cover, Giles moves under the cover with him) BUFFY: Well were ever here is? GILES: It looks like were in a different dimension. (pointing up at the two suns) FAITH: Damn…that’s sweet… KENNEDY: (moves around in front of Buffy) Buffy, I think we need to find some shelter before we cook. BUFFY: Yeah, don’t see anything, wait over in the distance (pointing) I see something. (then looks over were Dawn is) Cut to: FAITH: (slowly walking to her) Dawn? Dawn are you ok? DAWN: (eyes closed) I can feel something, its like calling me, (moving herself into the direction Buffy was pointing) its that way. (points also) BUFFY: I think that’s where we need to go. FAITH: Well I say that sounds interesting? BUFFY: I don’t know. But lets hope it’s a good sign. KENNDEY: (motioning to Dawn) Are you sure we should go by her instincts too?
