The new Z06 is the lightest, quickest, most rigid, agile production Corvette ever.
Zero to 60 in four seconds. Lateral acceleration: 1.0g. Top speed: over 170 mph.
Massive power alone does not make a high performance sports car.
All performance systems - engine, transmission, chassis, tires and
suspension must work in harmony.
In addition, the standard driver information computer displays in four
languages; English, German, French, and Spanish. The information center
can also be used to configure a full range of programmable settings.
The driver has a switch to control the standard Second-Generation
Active Handling system which works with Corvette's ABS and traction
control systems to assist the driver in keeping the car stable and
balanced in emergency or spirited driving conditions on wet or dry
surfaces. This sophisticated system is carefully calibrated to avoid
unwanted intrusion into the driving experience. Special componentry brake
pressure modulator, yaw-rate sensor, steering wheel angle sensor, lateral
accelerometer, and unique core software algorithms have been designed with
the goal of having no difference between driver input and vehicle response.
The new LS6 Engine: Faster revving. Deeper breathing. Stronger internals.
At the heart and soul of the LS6: new cylinder heads for better engine
breathing. Larger ports improve airflow by 10 percent. Compression ratio
is a healthy 10.5:1.
To exploit the LS6's greater flow capacities at high rpm, the engineers fitted a hotter
camshaft with more valve overlap and greater valve lift, new chrome-vanadium valve
springs, and stronger pistons cast from a more durable alloy. And to help air retreat
from the underside of the flaying pistons, the LS6 has windows cast into the internal
crankcase walls.
These collective changes result in 405 horsepower at 6000 rpm, 400 ft/lbs. of torque
at 4800 rpm, and a redline of 6500 rpm. Incidentally, by fitting a few of the LS6
pieces to the LS1 V-8, that engine gets bumped 5 horsepower and 25 ft/lbs.
New front fascia grilles improve airflow to the engine air inlet and give
the Z06 a purposeful, ready-to-race demeanor. Functional, race car
inspired rear cooling ducts complement the powerful four-wheel disc brake
system.
Titanium Exhaust
All this chassis hardware communicates with the pavement via Goodyear Eagle
F1 GS, asymmetric-tread tires that are 23 pounds lighter in weight and an
inch wider than the run-flat versions they replace.
Optional Heads-Up-Display (HUD) reflects selected gauge information onto the windshield
like fighter aircraft. Developed in conjunction with GM's Hughes Aircraft Division it's
standard on the Z06. Outputs for speed, RPM, performance upshift guide for the 6-speed,
and readings from key gauges, can be projected onto the windshield near the drivers
line of sight.
The unique-to-Z06 titanium mufflers and tailpipes reduce weight and are
corrosion-resistant. Corvette is first in the industry to use titanium in
the exhaust system of a mass production vehicle. Benefits include reduced
mass and higher strength than either aluminum or magnesium. Using titanium
reduces exhaust system weight by 50 percent, compared with a conventional
stainless-steel system.
