The Matrix Saga (A thought)
Friends, I would have made some mistakes in the dialogues or in the spellings of names of some of the characters. Kindly bear with that. Thanks. Enjoy the reading - Prashant Srivastava, 11.11.2003 3:27PM(IST)
Human Hits :
Matrix Revolutions

This edition of Matrix was the climax of the previous two versions. All the groundwork that the Wachowski brothers had done in The Matrix and Matrix Reloaded formed the base of the events being unfolded in the last half an hour of Matrix Revolutions. The crux of all the 3 parts of the series is revealed in the last scene when Architect is shown walking towards the Oracle and he says This is not fair. What does it mean? How can the Architect, the all powerful, who can see beyond all choices, which are just rules of an equation for him, could become so humble against a program called Oracle. By his statement it is evident that he had now realized the entity who had maneuvered the actions of Morpheus, Trinity, Neo and Smith and ultimately the fate of Matrix and the human race was Oracle. Why Oracle was hell bent into bringing the Architect into compromise is still not clear. All she says Its the choice that I have made.
More than half of the movie has showcased the war between the human race and the machines. All through the war it has been made very clear that brute force and firepower is not enough to gain victory over the machines. They would just not die like humans. No matter how many moves the human race made, no matter how many war tactics deployed, the machines would just overwhelm them with their large numbers. It all because humans are alive and they can be killed. They cant be replicated in as many a large number and in as short a time as the sentinels. A single man riding the APU would be able to shoot down maybe 100 sentinels, but a wave of 1000 can just not be handled, no matter how much firepower is at his disposal. This was shown a lot of times during the war driving the fact that fighting is not enough to win. Even the EMP, which was the ultimate weapon the resistance had against the machines, capable of nullifying all electrical hardware, was not good enough. The machines made a second wave of attack soon enough. As the commander literally falls back to hand to hand combat, eventually implying the weakening defense as the war progresses, the ferocity of the attack of machines doesnt degrades a bit.
So how would the war end? The inevitable seemed only one result.the defeat and death of Zion. The human race had set a major resistance against the machines. The sole reason being Life would never give up no matter how great the odds were. So if at all possible, how would the human race ever be free? It had to be something more than a war.
Belief, Love, Choice and Hope
Oracle says to Neo People can only make choices for things that they can see. They would not be able to see beyond that. Zion made the choice of fighting a war with the machines. It could not see beyond that. Morpheus had a belief of another choice, the choice of a single man. The commander could not see beyond war, so he could not comprehend the choice of either Morhpeus or Niobi. And that choice was Neo.
Here the basic element of life has been shown, BELIEF. Belief cant be transformed into a rule. It cannot be represented in the form any variable or any other entity. And thus it cannot be interpreted by something as logical as a machine or a software program. Smith would not be wrong in terming it as an illusion which the life uses to define a purpose to exist for.
However this analogy is defied when the Oracle exclaims in the end, No, I did not know, I believed. A software program stating the concept of belief and as a result scheduling its various tasks and processes as per it is a bit hard to BELIEVE. Oops.. again that word (cant help being human). It could be that Its just a word. What matters is the connection that it implies as stated by the Indian to Neo at the railway station. He also mentions the word LOVE, another powerful trait of life.
In fact the effect of love is showcased in Matrix Reloaded in the end when Neo has to make a choice when he is overwhelmed with the details of Matrix, Zion and his previous versions by the Architect. When Neo is told that the Architect is aware the choice Neo is going to make as that was what had been decided by his earlier 5 versions, he hesitates. Neo hesitates and love makes him do so. Love is what makes him believe that he can save Trinity and still carry on the fight. This LOVE and the eventual BELIEF resulting from it is what sets him apart from his earlier versions. Architect is very disturbed by this fact but still is not able to comprehend its far reaching effect on the actions of this 6th version. In fact this word, this emotion, whichever way one puts it, was there in the earlier versions. It had just peaked in this version. It is very well seen that these emotions had made Neo possible to bring Trinity back to life and eventually stop the war in the 3rd part.
The third word that has been implied very strongly is CHOICE. To a machine or a software program a choice would be mere IF THEN ELSE or any such similar construct to achieve a primary objective. The flow would be based on some firm rules so as to gain complete control of the process flow and achieve the desired result. However in case of humans its born purely out of BELIEF and which also lead to HOPE implying the expectations for a result.
All throughout the versions we see the role of all the four WORDS and the connection they imply inside the Matrix and the actions they govern outside Matrix.
Oracle to Morpheus
So how does it all fit together? And where does Oracle fit in all this? In the first edition, The Matrix, Oracle is shown to give a BELIEF to Morpheus, the BELIEF for an end of war, the BELIEF for liberation of the human race. And she also clearly states the CHOICES Morpheus would be confronted with. Actually Oracle shows the both the dilemma and the way to get out of it. Morpheus would CHOOSE a path based on his BELIEF. And thus Morpheus develops a HOPE for future. She gives him BELIEF in one single man, Neo. And based on that BELIEF he dedicates his life to Neo. Hes ready to give his own life for Neo and for his HOPE in 1st edition and goes on to fight Smith knowing very well that he would be defeated by the agent.
Oracle to Trinity
To Trinity she shows LOVE. Oracle tells Trinity that she would fall in LOVE with a dead man and that is Neo. Out of this LOVE Trinity develops a BELIEF in Neo. In fact LOVE is so profound in her that SHE WOULD GIVE UP ANYTHING AND EVERYHTING FOR NEO. Thats exactly what she does when in the 3rd edition she negotiates with the Frenchman for Neo. Shes ready to die for Neo.
Oracle to Neo
To Neo she presents a CHOICE. The CHOICE to BELIEVE in himself. He makes his choice .She also hints LOVE to him when she says You are so cute. No wonder she likes you and he eventually falls in LOVE with Trinity. The BELIEF in himself gives him HOPE for what he must do to save the world. This LOVE, BELIEF and HOPE are what make him fight Smith, his negative, his opposite and his equal.
Oracle to Niobi
To Niobi she gives BELIEF in Neo. With that BELIEF she makes the CHOICE to give Neo her ship to go to the machine city.
So Oracle tells everyone what one needs to be told. She is doing what she says I am at it again.
So how does it all come together? Well she would tell Neo what he needs to be told. She would be at it once again. In fact she shows him the way pretty early in the 3rd edition when she exclaims EVERYTHING THAT HAS A BEGINNING HAS AN END. That was the key. Neo is not able to understand it. It was beyond the CHOICES he was able to make.
She lays the groundwork for the battle between Neo and Smith makes a decision for the BELIEF that she had. The BELIEF for peace.
When Smith encounters Oracles, he sees her sitting calmly, smoking, with cookies on a platter waiting for Smith. Smith says himself You have deliberately put cookies here that means its for a purpose. Thus it means that you are deliberately sitting there for a purpose too. He asks her if she knew he was coming then why would she not run away. The expected happens, Smith modifies the program, the Oracle. There was the catch. Whenever Smith would modify a program and make a copy of himself the traits of program would not be lost. This was shown when Oracle asks Smith what he had done to the little girl and his one version replies Cookies need love too.
Smith to Neo
When Neo negotiates with the machine for peace the bargain is regarding the program Smith that has gone beyond the control of the Architect. A furious combat is shown between Smith and Neo. None is giving up. They both are fighting relentlessly. Smith would not die and Neo is still having his CHOICE to fight.
It was at that one moment when Neo is almost unconscious that Smith wonders I have seen this. This is the end. You are lying there and I am standing right here. And I am supposed to say something. And I say EVERYTHING THAT HAS A BEGINNING
HAS AN END, NEO.
This was what Neo needed to be told. And Oracle (still persistent inside Smith. Smith always called him Mr. Anderson and not Neo) did tell him at the precise time. The time at which Neo would be able to make a CHOICE which he was able to see now. The CHOICE of an end, the CHOICE to die.
Oracle had told Neo that Smith was his negative, his opposite. The equation of Matrix was trying to balance Neo in the form of Smith. Both were equally powerful. Equilibrium had to be maintained. Neo saw this at that moment. No Neo then no Smith. And No Smith then no Neo. And once Neo makes this CHOICE Smith shouts This is a trick. For the first time Smith is afraid of Neo. But its too late. Both the programs die or rather get deleted.
Did Oracle really see all this? Did she really plan the growth of Neo being aware of the equation of Matrix and knowing that Matrix would eventually produce the opposite of Neo (in the form of Smith) that the Architect would not be able to control and eventually would enter into a compromise and give in to peace.
Maybe she did. But she denies it. She says I BELIEVED.
