Principal’s Message

Families and Friends of PS 11;

It’s been a while since I spoke to you via this newsletter and I'm glad to have this opportunity to share some thoughts and concerns. Our superintendent, Shelley Harwayne, has been chosen one of the 10 educational leaders for the new Department of Education.  As far as I’m concerned, there could be no better choice.  Our school, as all the schools in our district will be under her supervision: several other districts will also be part of our "division nine."  Change isn’t always easy but I’m asking for your support to make sure learning continues at PS11 as it has for so many years.  Please be there if called on to support our educational beliefs: balanced literacy, assessment driven instruction and authentic learning based on what excites our kids.

I know that some parents are upset with letters they’ve received concerning lateness, but lessons begin at 8:30am; this means children should be in their room and ready to go. Having high expectations makes the children understand the importance of each minute of the school day.  We, as educators, feel this way.  In case of bad weather or long distances to travel, please plan to leave earlier; the morning is to drop off your child.  Allow the teacher to teach by making drop off as quickly as possible.  I understand sometimes conversation is needed, but those times should be rare: minutes are too valuable to give up. Please realize that by acting on these requests we can better give each child a learning experience rich in content, where both teachers and students hold high expectations. Thanks, and “see” you next month.

Francis Del Monaco, Principal

SUMMER IS COMING….eventually

For the past few summers OASIS has run a very successful summer camp in central park for children ages 6-13 (continuing this summer) with a new program starting this year on the Lower East Side (Oasis Downtown) using East River Park and a school on Houston Street, ”New Explorations into Science, Technology and Math”. This program is for children ages 4-7. For more information:www.oasischildren.com

Or call the director of enrolment: Anna Lacina 718 596 4900

     A BIG THANK YOU!

To all those who gave clothes in response to our request: a great response from our whole community.

Lesbian and Gay Parents/Families at PS11 will be getting together Wed., Feb.12th in the Parent Room after drop-off (8:30am) to plan some events that we, our families, and the PS11 community can join in together. Questions? Call Trudy at 212 982 0574

see a dream in the making

Stop by the library and see Gil Santiago’s plans for an outdoor science center in the PS11 yard: you won’t believe your eyes.  Go to the head of the class Gil. When he’s done, with OUR help, the yard will be a place where our children learn science and self-reliance.  Ask how you can help and be a part of an exciting and fun project.

CIRCLE IN THE SQUARE PROGRAM

Starting Feb.26th a professional theater team will collaborate with two 3rd grade teachers on Wednesday mornings to help students create an original play in which they identify characters, conflict and resolution.  Professional actors will perform the plays in Spring. “This program is an invaluable educational experience supporting P.S.11’s instructional program, and seamlessly meshes literacy and arts.” Fran Del Monaco

Now available for all PS11 students - Gilsports a Friday afterschool  program. Gil will pick up children at school in a yellow school van, inspected by D.O.T., with seat belts, take them directly to Chelsea Piers to skate in winter, or to baseball fields in the spring, and drop them off at home between 5:15 and 6:00 pm.  The cost is $45 per session for skating and $35 for baseball. Full day programs in school holidays!  For more information call Gil at 718 499-2093 or http://www.gilsports.com/ (Minimum of 8 children from PS11 required before this can happen.)
