| WANSU (and Empi) This is the first open hand kata that students are required to learn. From Wanshu or Wanji, a Chinese ambassadors name. Wanshu arrived in Okinawa in 1883 and supposedly taught the people of Tomari this original kata. Kyan, Chotoku learned it from Maeda Chiku Peichin, a Tomarite contemporary of Matusmora Kosasku. Funakoshi revised the kata in Japan renaming it Empi or Flying Swallow. Wanshu is a light and quick exercise with several steps to a crossed legged position. |
