From the PTA President...

With spring just around the corner (at least we can hope!), I want to thank everyone for their great response concerning student drop-off/pick-up, and parking at Pleasant Ridge. The school and PTA volunteers have been putting your ideas to work to assure that the process continues to provide the students with a safe means to and from school. As the weather continues to get warmer, more students will be riding bikes and walking to school, and we all need to be aware of their safety.

Not only is the month of March National Reading month, it is also Parenting Awareness month, which is a statewide campaign to promote awareness and educate families in all areas of parenting and to provide helpful resources to parents as well. It is also a time to emphasize the importance of effective parenting in order to help children achieve their goals, and to become caring citizens in the community. Our school counselor, Mary Gallagher, has a library of books and videos on a variety of parenting topics available for parents to check out.

Included in this newsletter is an invitation to attend a parent workshop led by Tom Jackson, a nationally recognized speaker, trainer and author. Please consider attending this workshop, which is entitled, "Activities that Teach Family Values". This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about family activities that really make a difference in the areas of caring, cooperation, honesty, responsibility, and more.

Thank you to all of you for your continuous support of the PTA, the school community, and your support of our children!

Sincerely, Lisa

Warmly,

Lisa Flynn

Activities That Teach Family Values

Featuring: Tom Jackson

Parent Speaker Trainer Author

Thursday, April 19, 2001

Saline High School Cafeteria

7:00pm - 9:00pm

Tom Jackson is an expert on inter-active learning which promotes cooperation,

collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking and experimental learning.

Tom will use his "learn by doing" approach to walk you though a number

of activities from his book on "Activities That Teach Family Values".

Tom’s activities help parents to move from lecturing to sharing. You’ll be given real tools for real families to use during the critical years (ages 7 ½ to 15 ½).

Tom blends humor and enthusiasm with real-world experiences to involve you and

teach you how to use teachable moments to equip your children

to realize their fullest potential.

You won’t just attend this presentation… You will experience it!

CARNIVAL HATS OFF TO EVERYONE!

The Carnival committee would like to extend a warm thank-you to all of those involved with "Carnival 2001". Pleasant Ridge was wonderfully represented by teachers, staff and parents. This event would not have transpired without the support of Pleasant Ridge and the community. The overwhelming contributions of assistance, attractive baked goods and attendance were key elements to the Carnival’s success. We all should be honored to be a part of the Pleasant Ridge family.

"Carnival 2001" was one of the first cooperative ventures between Pleasant Ridge, Houghton and Woodland Meadows to create a community wide event. It is hoped that we can continue such efforts that build stronger and closer relationships.

In the coming months a permanent storage for the carnival games and materials must be found. Currently the options are:

1. On-site (at Pleasant Ridge) storage shed built by volunteers

2. Relocate a donated shed

Both options would require assistance with concrete pad and assembly labor. If you, or anyone you know, can assist and/or donate the concrete and time to perform this job, please contact PTA presidents, Lisa Flynn/Pleasant Ridge (429-5795), Nancy Carter/Houghton, (663-5623) or Barb Schaeffe/Woodland Meadows (429-7251).

Thanks again for your continuing support!
