| Okay, okay, call it what you will; a cop-out, a way out for when I'm 50 and hate all of these bands--But I can't just designate my favorite band to anyone yet. There's just too much incredibly good music coming out all over the world. Look at record labels like Go, Jade Tree, Sub-Pop, Tooth and Nail, and Matador... They've put out some of the most inventive and infectious music the last 2 decades have seen. I am confident that they and thousands of others are committed to amazing new music. So maybe it is a cop-out. Maybe it's just my way of saying that music continually changes. In the last few months as Tim and I wrote these pages, I have discovered so many incredible bands; everything from Canned Heat and John Vanderslice to Daniel Johnston and Super Furry Animals. And the search continues. THAT's what makes music exciting. THAT's what makes people want more. THAT's why my #1 is blank. And I think it's a damned good reason, too. |
