What can I say? No albums effected my life more than Elvis Costello's first three productions. When I bought My Aim is True on a whim in the 10th grade, I didn't know what to make of it. I listened to it once and forgot it for months. Then I decided to give it another listen.
I listened carefully this time; I studied the words--I found a fascinating world of deceit, betrayal, masochism, and heartache. I realized what E.C. was going through when he wrote those songs. And it changed me. I must have listened to that album for 10 months straight. Artistically, I would put Elvis Costello somewhere between Shakespeare and Jesus Christ. His lyrics are swimming in depth and bursting with re-interpretation. If you're of my generation and what to hear some truly thought-provoking music, pick up My Aim is True.
