James Miller Born - November 23, 1857 Dover, England Died - October 14, 1926 Winnipeg, Manitoba Married April 23, 1876 - Napannee, Ontario to: Ellen Thelma Loomis Born - October 21, 1855 United States of America Died - August 12, 1918 Amaranth, Manitoba According to the 1901 census taken in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, James Miller immigrated from England in 1875. His wife, Ellen, immigrated with her family from the United States. Her family is said to have United Empire Loyalist ties. James Miller owned his own barber shop in Portage. Iola Prout once had very long hair that she got tired of when she was about fifteen years old. Besides that, short hair was "all the rage" at the time so she marched into her grandfather's barber shop and instructed him to "cut it off - I'm tired of all this hair!" According to her he tried in vain to talk her out of it but in the end did as she demanded - crying the whole time he was cutting it over the loss of his grandaughter's beautiful hair. Grandmother Miller taught Iola how to crochet (a favorite passtime of hers right up until her death in February, 2000) and also taught her how to do fancy sewing work. Ellen was a very large lady who kept a very clean and orderly house. A place for everything and everything always in its place was her motto! James and Ellen eventually sold the barber shop and bought as farm in Amaranth, Manitoba which was on Lake Manitoba. Iola had very fond memories of her Miller grandparents and described them as the sweetest and kindest people you would ever meet. James and Ellen had four children: Phillip, Lyda, Eva and Dudley. ************************************************************************************************************** |
