Road To Nowhere Chapter 7: Can't Sleep

Matt barged into his house cheering. We won! We won!

His mom came running down the stairs. Oh sweetie, thats awesome! Congratulations!

Matt hugged her. Thanks Mom. I think Im gonna go to bed now. I am so tired from practice and everything. Matt went into his room and dropped heavily onto the bed. His eyes were closing as the phone beside his bed rang.

He picked it up. Hello? he said annoyed that whoever it was couldnt leave him alone for the night.

Matt? Courtneys voice asked him.

Court? Girl, are you okay? he asked sitting up in bed, fully awake now.

Yeah Matt, Im fine. I just needed someone to talk to, Courtney said.

What do you want to talk about? Matt asked her.

Um Dan Courtney said ashamed.

You like him dont ya? Matt teased her.

Shut up Matt! Dont say anything to anyone, Courtney threatened.

Or what? he asked mocking her.

Or Ill kick your ass! Courtney cried.

Id like to see you try, Matt laughed.

Dont make me come over there! Courtney stopped joking and got serious. Matt, do you know Dans number?

Can't say that I do, Matt said. Goodnight Courtney. Ill call you tomorrow.

Night Matt. Talk to you then, Courtney said before Matt hung up the phone and drifted off into a state of unconsciousness.

Dan couldnt sleep. He was in and out of dreamless sleep all night. He couldnt believe that he had opened up to Chelsea. He wanted to open up to Courtney, but he didnt know how to yet. He wished he had her number. He wanted to hear her sweet voice. It would soothe him and help him sleep.

Unfortunately, he couldnt call her up in them middle of the night. Not only because he didnt have her number but because she didnt want to talk to him. He would have to wait until Monday to see her.

Dan finally fell asleep for good. His dreams consisted of her smiling face, her beautiful body, her glistening hair. His dreams tormented him. They teased and mocked him. They knew that he could never have her and deep down he knew too. He just couldnt say the words aloud.

Courtney spent the majority of the weekend deciding how to approach Dan and make her move. She ransacked her closet, looking for the perfect outfit for Monday. She tossed and turned and couldnt sit still thinking, dreaming of him. His smile had revealed to her that he would understand what had happened to her.

She didnt know if she was strong enough to relay the story to him. It hurt her so much just to think about it. She wanted to forget about it and just keep it locked in her heart. She knew that she had to tell him, though. She knew thats what she had to do to win his heart.

Matt acted like he had a hangover all weekend. He was so excited that they had won the big Centennial game. He was hyped up for the next game on the following Friday. He slept most of the weekend reliving the victory in his dreams.

He was pleased that Courtney had started warming up to Dan. He knew his little plan would work. Getting out of picking up Dan last minute had worked like a charm. He saw the way Dan looked at Courtney and he was beginning to see the way Courtney looked at Dan. Matt couldnt be happier.

How was your weekend, Court? Chelsea asked Courtney as they walked down the hall to Courtneys locker.

Pretty boring, actually, Courtney replied. She had chosen low rider jeans with a tight fitted yellow baby tee to wear on the all-important day.

Have you talked to Dan since Friday? Chelsea asked biting her lip.

No. Why? Do you know something I dont? Courtney asked opening her locker.

I think Dan has a secret he wants to share with you, Chelsea said.

I was going to tell him about Mike today, Courtney twirled her hair, a nervous habit of hers.

After he tells you his thing, youll both totally understand where youre coming from, Chelsea said grabbing Courtneys books from her locker.

I doubt he could have gone through any of the things that I went through, Courtney said closing the locker and walking toward her homeroom. But whatever. Later Chels.

Courtney waited for Dan to get to homeroom. When Dan sat down he shot Courtney a heart-melting smile.

Dan, we have to talk today, Courtney said.

I was going to tell you the same thing, Dan replied surprised that she was reading his mind.

Okay. Meet me out front after school, Courtney said opening her binder and finishing her bio homework.
