Road To Nowhere Chapter 6: Where Life Takes Me Dan waited in front of the house Matt had dropped him off at earlier. Where is Matt? he wondered. He checked his watch. 6:24 P.M. If Matt didnt hurry up, he would be late for the game. Just then a car sped down the street, passed Dan, turned around, and stopped in front of him. The passenger window rolled down. Dan was surprised to see Courtney in the drivers seat. Hey Dan. Want a ride? she asked. Sure. Thanks, Dan said getting in. Matt couldnt come because Coach decided to have an extra practice. They are going to be so tired and not play well, Courtney said as she drove toward Palo Verde High School. Dan checked out her outfit. She looked hot in Palo Verdes school colors of blue and gold. Her strawberry blonde hair was curled and up with gold and blue ribbons tied in it. She had shimmery gold eye shadow that illuminated her green eyes. Her long, tan legs stepped on the gas. So he waits until the last minute to tell me that you dont have a ride to the game. I got here as quick as I could, Courtney was saying. Dan hardly heard a word she said. Her beauty dumbfounded him. Thanks for coming at all, Courtney, Dan smiled at her. Courtney was taken aback by his gorgeous smile. Aww, no problemo Dan. You can call me Court. Everyone else does. Neither person knew it, but they were falling in love with each other. Past or no past. * * * * Palo Verde Panthers! Fight! Fight! Fight! Courtney and the other cheerleaders cheered on the crowd. Dan stood up with the rest of the crowd really getting into the game. Palo Verde was up 14 to 7 and it was almost halftime. Dan couldnt wait to see the cheerleaders do their routine. Chelsea came over and sat next to Dan. Hi Dan. Hi um, Chelsea, right? Dan asked. Yeah, Chelsea said smiling at him. So, you and Court are best friends? Dan made small talk. He was grateful for the company. Yeah. Ive known Court since sophomore year. I was new at the beginning of last year, Chelsea said Was it hard moving? Dan asked. Yeah. It was. I moved here from Seattle, Chelsea said as she waved at Courtney. Yeah, Dan shrugged. It wasnt really that hard moving from Ohio. Why not? Chelsea asked. I got in some trouble at my last school and didnt really have any friends, Dan said. What kind of trouble? Chelsea asked kindheartedly. Dan trusted her. I set fire to the bio lab on purpose and got expelled. My parents thought it was best if we moved somewhere new, like a fresh start. Wow, Chelsea breathed in. Is that it? I was a real bad boy. I was always in the principals office, Dan confessed. Have you told Courtney yet? Chelsea asked suddenly becoming very uneasy. No. She wouldnt understand anyway. She has everything and has never had to deal with thoughts of suicide and such, Dan looked away from Chelseas face to the football field. Dan, you shouldnt assume things like that. Courts had some tough issues that shes had to deal with. Thats why I think you need to tell her, Chelsea said getting up. Ill see ya around. Yeah. Okay, Dan said watching her go. * * * * Courtney looked at her reflection in the mirror. She had taken off all her makeup and her cheerleader outfit. She had taken off her bad girl attitude and looked in the mirror. Her reflection made her a little uncomfortable. She saw the weak girl that deep down she knew she was. She didnt like to be reminded of that, but Dan had done that to her. He had reminded her of who she really was. * * * *
