The Madder Den
The clutch was hard, and at last, after two or three false alarms... The call went up, and the eerily beautiful sound of the dragons humming in the sands below confirmed it. It was early, not really sunrise, but certainly before the rest of the weyr got rolling.

The first to hatch was a blue, and he bounded around until the candidates all arrived. Then two greens hatched, and afterwards a gold came out and chose a girl who'd just fallen and scraped her arm. A beautiful brown came out annoyed that his sister was getting all the attention. He bonded loudly, and then two more greens hatched. They bonded while another dragon came out, a bronze. Well, he didn't really come out so much as have to be dug out by his bonded!

Two blues, and a beautiful white hatched. A white! Then a fabulous green bonded to an actor, the a brown came out and impressed a girl. Four eggs came open, and the bronze who was biggest harshly insisted that the other three back off. He stood to his full height, opened his wide wings.

This was a beautiful dragon, and the men and younger boys who stood on the sands were intimidated by him. All but Umber. He stepped toward the bronze and gazed at his orangey eyes, until the dragon's eye color changed to a more subtle red-grey.

Did I frighten you? I knew that one of you human people would come to me, but I did not know who. I am Nemerith.

"No, Nemerith, you didn't frighten me." Umber said, smiling slightly. Then one of the greens came through near them and boldly stepped to her bond nearby. The blue who had hatched came up to Cinnabar.

I'm, Tentioth and you're mind, right? Betcha when I get big we'll be the best fighters in the wing yup yup yup! And we won't have to answer to anyone either, right my rider? ... Right? Cinnabar glanced around, wondering how this dragon could possibly be attached to him. A fighting dragon? Well... I suppose that we will be able to fight... But I'd rather keep watching for information.

I like that too! That will be fun, but I will want to prove that we don't need any--

"Okay, Tentioth... Okay!" Cinnabar laughed.

Several minutes and several more hatchings later, five eggs shattered and showed a great bunch of hatchlings, including a fine brown. They huddled together, but then the brown barked at his bronze brother in annoyance.

I will do what I will! You cannot tell me where to go and who to bond! I choose that one! You cannot have her, and you will not even know my name! He approached Sienna and looked at her with a knowing swirl in his eyes. You are mine. I am Mezarouth. I think there are some thieves among your other candidates...

I know, sweet. I know that, and I'm glad you do too! That's one less thing I have to worry about.

They finally left the sands, with their brothers.
