I want to set forth on my narrative by quoting an article on Protasyevs found in Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedia. Protasyevs: Noble family, descending, according to Old Russian records, from Grigoriy Protasyevich, as well as Protasovs do. Voevod (governor of a province in ancient Russia), Grigoriy Protasyevich Protasyev was a great-grandson of Moscow boyar Luka Protasov, which had been an ambassador in the Russian town of Tver in 1330. Mtsensk governor Grigoriy Protasyevich has gained a victory over the  Tatars in 1423 - rd and in 1424 - th; in 1429 - th he was treacherously captivated by Tatarinan Prince Aidar.   Grigoriy's descendant Alexander Petrovich Protasyev has attained a rank of okolnichy (in the old Russia person of one of highest ranks of boyars) in 1692 - nd. The Protasyevs were included into nobility of the following regions of Russia: Moscow, Vladimir, Yaroslavl, Ryazan, Kostroma and Tambov Regions (gubernias). The surname of Protasyev itself is derived from a Russian canonical name Protasiy, which has come from Old Greek 'protos', i. e. 'first'.

Mikhail Fyodorovich Protasyev was born on September 11th, 1778 in Moscow, Russia. Aristocrat, descendant of noble family tracing its roots from the XIV-th century. M. F. Protasyev died on the 4th
of September, 1848.
In February of 1809th M. F. has gotten married to Yelizaveta Petrovna Dubovitsky. His spouse descended from Russian noble family of Dubovitsky, tracing its roots from Ioann Voin Lamovsky-Dubovitsky, who has arrived to Russia in c. 1500' s. She was born on December 27th, 1791 in her father' s estate Stenkino. Ye. P. Protasyev died on the 31st of December, 1847 in Moscow. Both spouses had been burried in Pokrovsky monastry in Moscow, which was destroyed by commies less than a century after. Pokrovsky monastry is partially exists as a several buildings. M. F. and Ye. P. Protasyevs had 5 children - Fyodor (1812-1860), Alexander (1818-1839), Nadezhda (1814-1891), Yekaterina (1816), Dmitry (1810-1852). Yekaterina M. Protasyev was married to Ivan Ignatyevich Romanov. Nadezhda Mikhailovna was married to Nikolay Ivanovich Behr.
M. F. and Ye. P. Protasyevs were active aristocrats in Moscow of 1820's - 1840's, taking part in careers of Pr, Ye. P. Obolensky (1796-1865) and A. P. Dubovitsky (1782-1848) persecuted and exiled by the government. Andrey Vasilyevich Protasyev, cousin of M. F. Protasyev, has especially strived to help his brother-in-law, who was exiled together with other decembrists. Working through channels, Protasyevs had been helping to relative - Pr. A. I. Odoevsky -  also exiled by virtue of participation in Decembrists' Protest taken place on December, 25th, 1825 in St. Petersburg. Visit a page devoted to A. I. Odoevsky.
Mikhail F. Protasyev was Counsillor of State, had been serving in Preobrazhensky Regiment, like his father - Fyodor Protasyev. Fyodor Protasyev was prominent high-rank officer, landowner. His land property exceeded 100 sq. km. merely in Ryazan Region, its generally called ' Protasyev Ugol '. Fyodor Protasyev has created church 'Spasskaya' ('Protasyevo-Uglyandskaya') in  Protasyev Ugol according to the project of famous Russian architect M. F. Kazakov. Protasyevs had had a palace in Protasyev Ugol, perched at a hill,
surrounded by grandeur of nature of Middle tract of Russia. Antagonistic to Russian culture, and therefore,
to landowners, commies usurped Protasyev Ugol in 1918, along with the other estates. Nevertheless, sizing up to Ugol they miscalculated; of course, communists failed to keep these beautiful places in order. For the time being, Protasyev Ugol and its areas are forsaken, rifled and almost forgotten.
M. F. and Ye. P. Protasyevs had been friends with V. A. Tropinin. Liberal, progressive environment in families of Protasyevs and Behrs has appealed to the Tropinin. This Russian painter has created a range of portraits of Protasyevs and Behrs. A number of the portraits were painted in Moscow.
Here, on this page devoted to Protasyevs, you visitor see those portraits painted in Protasyevs' Moscow houses located at the street of Arbat. Click to enlarge them. Portraits by Tropinin are presently
stored in Russian Museum and Tretiakov Gallery. V. A. Tropinin was extremely prolific painter; click here to get to know more about his legacy.
So, Protasyevs were progressive figures and philanthropists. Details on Protasyevs' genealogy are available from Russian federal, regional and local archives, literature, publications, issues about creative activity of V. A. Tropinin. Furthermore, historician of last century-N. S. Shaizhin - a lecturer at Petrozovodsk Seminary, is an author of very necessary and sought by me publication dedicated to the family. It's been published under the title ' Historical Data on the Noble Family of Protasyevs '. In 1960' s this valuable book was in the family archive of Mrs. A. N. Kiselyov. I will be very grateful for any information about Kiselyovs - relatives of Protasyevs (there are several portraits of Kiselyovs by Tropinin) and destiny of the book, too. I also try to find colleages of Mr. Georgiy K. Vagner, who wrote ' Tropinin and Protasyevs' in 'Proceedings of Institute for Arts History of 1960' (Moscow, 1961).
