Abraham Lincoln (12 February 1809 - 15 April 1865) was the 16th President of the United States and led the country during the American Civil War. Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery and oversaw the Union war effort during the American Civil War. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was his most famous speech and allowed him to abolish slavery and start reconstruction of his country. Lincoln is an icon of American nationalism.

The 16th President of the United States, Lincoln drafted the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 which freed all slaves in the United States. Speaking out against slavery, President Lincoln said, "Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves: and, under a just God cannot long retain it."

As a defender of liberty, Lincoln often referred to the Scriptures in his speeches. His famous Gettysburg Address was delivered from the battlefield during one of our nation's most difficult wars:

"Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal...We here highly resolve that the dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
