PROJECT KHUFU
Description
By far, the majority of us
will never have the opportunity to travel to Egypt
to see the pyramids. This exercise will give concrete testimony to
the incredible accomplishment of the ancient Egyptians. We will construct
a visual representation, in full-size, of the
Great Pyramid of Khufu. The project should be a joint effort across age
groups and across the curriculum.
The pyramid should be built
in the morning of a relatively windless day. All local media should
be invited, as should district administration to this extremely visual
event. At completion, your pyramid, as the original will be 481 feet
high, 756 feet each side of a square base, with the royal burial chamber
indicated 160 feet up at the center.
The project doesn't cost
much for what you get. The peak will be designated by a five foot
balloon filled with helium. The four sides will be indicated by 30
pound test nylon fishing line. Colored 11 inch balloons will be affixed
to this line about every 20 feet. The royal burial chamber will be
indicated by a bouquet of helium balloons attached to the center tether
line at the appropriate height. Five teams, consisting of a teacher
and students, will play out line from each of the four corners and the
center at the same time while Project Khufu rises
on your campus.
