KAMP Interview Page 2
Interviewer: Well um, since you’ve only been with the band since Black Sails, what is your favorite AFI album?

Jade: Um, the current one, obviously, I mean doesn’t every band always say that their newest record is their favorite? In this case, it’s true.

Interviewer: Um, how ‘bout like favorite song to play live, or you know, the big finisher, or otherwise?

Jade: Um, I don’t have a single favorite because, playing the songs that are like slower, and that has a different vibe than to play something fast so there’s a bunch, I like to play them for different reasons, like God Called in Sick Today. I love to play that song, and uh, Death of Seasons on our new record is a great song to play.

Interviewer: Are you happy with how radio has picked up Girl’s Not Grey, and the same with MTV, like what are your feelings about going more into the mainstream and how maybe your old fans feel about that.

Jade: Um, I think it’s great, I mean, any band, maybe with the exception of Fugazi, they want people to hear their music, and they want to be successful, and that doesn’t have to do with really, you know, changing your music, or anybody’s conception of selling out so we’re totally stoked. Any fan that has a real problem with it I don’t think is a real fan, just because our hardcore fans are very happy for us. And any fan that’s going to be like “I don’t want to listen to you because you’re on MTV,” well that’s fine with us.

Interviewer: Um, what’s uh, well you said you don’t have necessarily a favorite song to play live, but speaking of the live show, what’s the best part about being up onstage and getting the reaction from your fans that you do at your shows, and what would you say your favorite part about playing live is?

Jade: Um, I think you just answered the question. Being up onstage and getting a reaction from the fans. It’s great, everything about playing live is great. It’s the best part of being a band in my opinion, recording is kind of more like work, and really, you’re just recording so you can go out and play those songs live. Definitely my favorite part.

Interviewer: Um well that goes along with my next question, about the best and worst parts of being on tour um, you know for such long periods of time and whatever.

Jade: This band’s been touring for like, 8 years now? And this is the first headline tour in a bus, so we’ve been doing van tours for years and years, and the worst part about that is everybody in the band is vegan or vegetarian, and you basically eat at gas stations, you know? So to be a vegetarian, and eat at a gas station, you just don’t eat very well, and then you get sick, cos you’re all run down, but it’s all worth it, I mean, I would gladly tour in a van for the rest of my life, if I got to play music. So really, technically there’s nothing bad about touring. Although every time I go to Canada I get strep throat.

Interviewer: Well at least you didn’t get SARS.

Jade: (coughs)

Interviewer: Oh, well uh, I’ll just stay on this side of the bus. Alright, do any of you guys have any family, back home, and do you still live in the San Francisco area in California?

Jade: Yeah up until about a year ago we all lived in the same house, in like an old run down, it was kind of like a squat slash b-commissioned frat house, and we just actually got out on our own, which is kind of amazing but uh, yeah all our family are from northern California, and we all live in the Bay Area, I live in Berkely. (cough) Damn it! SARS is acting up like crazy right now. Hunter and Dave live in Oakland and Adam lives in San Francisco.
