The importance of computers in people’s lives and lifestyle is rarely noticed. They not only impact our normal life daily, but will continue to do so for many years to come. I will discuss how the accessibility to a portable computer can greatly help your education, the workplace, and your everyday life if you so happen to purchase one.

In chapter one the book describes portable PC’s as “computers that are designed to be easily carried around” pg.23. Because it is not easy to carry around your home desktop from place to place. This is where the portable PCs or Laptops comes into play. Laptops can enhance your education experience due to the fact that you have your information highway at the tip of your fingers. Doing research for your next paper, or finding the textbook you need for the right price can save you a great deal of time when you own a laptop. This has a great affect on my education being that I can stay on campus rather than going home. Access to the internet with the Campus wireless internet turns lunch time into some much needed study time. If you are fortunate to own a laptop take advantage of it, I know writing papers at home can be very difficult task with all the distraction of our everyday home life.

Owning a laptop in the workforce can make you seem more professional. It shows that you care about your job and you take your job seriously. You can store the next meetings files, that big client’s info and upcoming strategies for the new quarter. All of these positives can also make a quick turn into negative with the vulnerability of personal information on a laptop. Be aware that storing your companies and or customer info on your laptop can also be very dangerous and you will be held responsible. That is why it is imperative to have a laptop lock and a username and password to provide that extra security

When I am at home lounging around, it is very convenient to get the upcoming movie times, or buy the next concert tickets to my favorite band. With the use of my laptop it makes these tasks quite easier. The revolutionary age of the laptop has since moved onto “battery length” and ”size”. Companies are trying to outdo the other with a smaller, or long lasting laptop so you can mock the Desktop PC Experience. When making your purchase on a laptop keep in mind of the differences when you are choosing you next laptop, and make sure you know what is important to you, and the purpose of your purchase before making any decisions.

 Purchasing a New PC

I consider myself to be a pretty computer savvy person in general. I have built the PC I currently use but I am no expert. I will guide you through a purchase I would make because my next purchase will be pretty soon. My computer is semi-outdated and it will soon be time for a replacement. I will go over the Motherboard and CPU, Hard Drive, CD/DVD recorder-player, and finally graphics card. I decided to do my shopping at Newegg.com because they have great prices and fast shipping.

The motherboard and CPU are an important component when making your purchasing decision, this is usually the first decision because it based on two simple chipsets, either AMD or Intel. Since I am loyal to the AMD Chips I will choose a motherboard that supports it. The motherboard I chose supports all AM2+/AM2 Chips. So I will select accordingly. I went ahead and selected a ASUS M3A, it supports the chips I mentioned above and is a bargain at 79.99. Because I selected that type of motherboard, I need to buy a chip that will fit into the motherboard. So far I have this

Now I will select the brain, the CPU chip. I will have a buy a AM2 or a AM2+ chip to fit with the motherboard I have purchased. I will choose the AM2 chip because the majority of people have purchased this chip (over 800 positive feedback) and it is a 2x winner of the customer choice award. The chip is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ operating at 2.6Ghz. it is also only 81.99. That brings our cart to this

For a hardrive, I would not need anything to fancy or big. I’m a student who occasionally plays a computer game or two every now and then. And all I really save to my computer is some MP3’s and reports for school. For the HD I decided to go with the trusty company of Western Digital. They are a major player in the hard drive game and I trust my money with them. I chose to get a budget friendly 250GB Model. This will provide me with enough space for anything I will do for years to come. Western Digital 250GB

Now I will need something to play my DVDs and make an occasional music CD, I will need something fast because I am almost in a hurry before I make my music mix for the day, so speed is definitely going to be a factor.  For the burner I decided to go with a top of the line choice and also future proof with the Blu-Ray Techonology. I chose the LG Blu-ray/HD-DVD reader & DVD It has max speeds on reading/writing of all formats from CD-R to DVD-R. To much to list and at 164.99 shows that you get what you pay for.

Now I need Ram to run my programs and help my computer run as fast as I want it to. I decided to go with a 184 Pin model because that is what fits on my motherboard. I also chose a top seller and a 3x winner of a customer choice award and it is the G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400. This will make sure my computer runs with no problems when I have multiple applications running.

I finished off my order with a simple black case for 29.99 and decided to stick with the onboard graphics for now since I will not be partaking in any graphics intense games due to lack of time. The power supply, mouse keyboard etc…would all be taken from my old machine and transferred to the new tower case. I would now process my order and receive my products within 3-4 days and start building from there. Building a top level pc does not cost an arm and a leg anymore. And due to Moore’s law I will most likely be building one within the next couple years.
