Cartoon Enlargement

Note: The word, "cartoon" is derived from an ancient word meaning "paper".  In addition to its common meaning of a simplified, often humorous drawing, it also describes "a preliminary sketch similar in size to the work, such as a
fresco, that is to be copied from it."  It is this second meaning that is to be applied here.

The cartoon method is an ancient technique used by artists to enlarge a small image.  To do this, the artist imposes a regular grid on the small image.  The grid is designed to balance accuracy against efficiency: smaller grid cells enable greater accuracy. Next the artist recreates this grid but at a larger scale.  In the example above the small grid has one inch squares.  The larger grid's squares are one foot.  The artist transfers the shapes of the small drawing to the larger grid freehand by eye using the squares as an aid to retain proportions and placements.

Draw a high contrast self portrait. Using the cartoon method, scale your drawing up to a height of aproximately 60".
Stretching
The cartoon method can change the proportions of the original by simply changing the proportion of the guiding squares.  For example, the image below was widened by drawing the original into a grid whose squares are 12 inches high but 24 inches wide.
