LIFEGUARD REVIEW COURSE - 2005

I shall conduct a Lifeguard Review course from Monday, May 16 through Friday, May 20. Classes will run from 9 AM to about 11:30 AM, or whenever the work is done. The schedule is flexible to allow for graduation activities.

Students must be currently certified as Red Cross Lifeguards. If they have yet not renewed their CPR-PR this year, they must make individual arrangements with the Red Cross for this.

There is no pool fee for this class, but there IS a Red Cross fee of $125, which includes the latest text. You must pass the swim prerequisite on the first day and be able to swim 500 yards continuously, using crawl stroke (freestyle) for 200 consecutive yards, breaststroke for 100 consecutive yards and the balance of the swim in crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of the two strokes. You must also be able to submerge to a minimum depth of 7 feet and bring a 10-pound weight to the surface and You must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using legs only, with arms crossed at chest. The new written exam consists of four 15-question sections. You must score 80% or better on each section to pass. I strongly recommend that review students re-read their texts BEFORE the course begins.

Register by phoning the Covington Red Cross office at 985-892-4317. My pool is located in Slidell.

Getting to my place: If you are coming from I-10 exit at 190W (Gause Blvd.) and head WEST. (An alternatice exit--and less traffic--is at the bottom of the page.) Continue through endless traffic lights until you cross US 11 and then the railroad tracks. Keep going till you get to the THIRD light after the tracks. This will be Carroll Road, and there's a Circle K on one corner. Turn LEFT on Carroll and continue about 1/2 mile(?) until you get to Garden Drive on the RIGHT. (This is the next street on the right after the school.) Turn right on Garden Drive, continue for almost a mile. I'm half a block after the second stop sign, and just before the third. The house is on the left, and the yellow mailbox is on the right. For safest parking, turn right at the stop sign and park on Myrtle. Watch out for the scofflaws who ignore the stop signs.

If you are coming from I-12, get off at the Airport Road exit by the malls. Go towards 190W. Turn LEFT there and continue until you get to Carroll Road. (That's the second light.) Turn left on Carroll and follow above directions.

If you're coming up Bayou liberty, turn onto Carroll at the light. Garden is on the left, a bit after the empty store. If you're coming from Gause and know your way around, cut over onto E. Hall by turning onto Fla. AVe. just after the 7th Street light and making a fast right. Continue up E. Hall past PJ's and when you cross the tracks you'll be on W. Hall, which will take you to Carroll. Left on Carroll, then right almost immediately on Garden Drive.

(I think that covers almost all possibilities. I hope so.)

This course treats lifeguarding as a profession. A lifeguard is responsible for the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. To do this, a lifeguard must have a thorough knowledge of surveillance and rescue techniques and an understanding of facility policies, procedures, and rules. As professional rescuers, lifeguards are legally obligated, within the bounds of their training, to respond to and provide care in emergencies. Lifeguards may be found legally negligent if they are inattentive and fail to notice someone drowning or in distress, or if they fail to control horseplay or actions by patrons that result in injury to someone.
