| CLASS THREE - 23 September In today's class we will again focus on the sighting and measuring of objects and drawing the outlines of shapes and understanding their visual relationships. HOMEWORK - Set up a small still-life consisting of 3 to 4 cylindrical objects. Using the techniques explored in sighting and measuring, render the objects to the best of your ability. This should be done as a thumbnail sketch (see the definition below) in your sketchbook. Read Pages 16 - 28 in your text and, in second drawing, complete the sketchbook assignment on page 25 of your text. CLASS FOUR - 25 September Wednesday's class will introduce positive and negative area. The negative area in a drawing is that area which does not contain objects or solid forms. It is the space around, and between, the forms you are rendering. The objects, or solid forms, in your drawing are what is referred to as positive area. To aid in your ability to understand negative area we will use a view-finder. Please refer to the view-finder handout at the start of the Drawing I page. For this you will need 18" x 24" drawing pad, a B graphite stick, metal ruler, exacto or utility knife and illustration board (10" x 12). There will also be a brief discussion on planar analysis. |
| Planar Analysis The process of structurally analyzing the volume of a form as flat shapes. |

| HOMEWORK - read pages 29 - 35 in the text Drawing Basics and, in your sketchook, complete three planar analysis drawings of fruit (apples, bananas, etc.) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Following the negative area exercise and introduction of planar analysis we will then begin creating thumbnail sketches of the still life that will be Project I. Thumbnail sketches are small studies of the subject(s) that you intend to draw in a larger scale. It is important that you select a format ( height and width of the picture plan) that is proportionate to the size of your final drawing. Remember that your final drawing will be 18" x 24" so your thumbnail sketches should be 3" x 4", or 6" x 8". | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| PROJECT I THUMBNAIL SKETCHES - due at the start of class on 30 Sept. To begin Project I you should create three thumnail sketches of the still-life. Each thumbnail sketch should be done from a different vantage point. Remember that Project I will contain no value. It should be a linear drawing only, focusiing on the correct rendering of forms and thier proportional relationships. |
| CLASS FIVE - 30 September Today we will begin Project I in class. You should bring your 18" x 24" drawing pad, sketchbook, pencils, viewfinder and erasure. CLASS SIX - 2 October We will critique Project I. Then we will work with Graphite to create value (see next page). |
| PROJECT I OBJECTIVES 1. To successfully employ sighting and measuring techniques to accurately render forms. 2. To recognize the role of negative and positive area within a composition. 3. Familiarize the student with Planar Analysis |
| PROJECT I REQUIREMENTS 1. Size:18" X 24" 2. Drawing must contain all items in the still-life. 3. Drawing must depict accurately rendered forms. 4. Drawing is to be line only. No value. 5. Drawing should exhibit all lines from the sighting and measuring process. 6. Fruit objects are to be rendered using planar analysis. |

| Project I will be due at the start of class on 2 October. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| HOME WORK - Continue your practice of the sighting and measuring practice by drawing five different cylindrical objects(one per page). Focus on the proportions and ellipses. Then add value to them using hatching and cross hatching. Remember that the role of value is to create the illusion of form. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
