| HOMEWORK (due 5 Feb) - Create designs that utilizes a single motif repeatedy. You might want to think in terms of fabric design. Repetition and pattern are very imported things to consider when creating your designs. I encourage you think linearly first...your color choices will follow. The design may employ only four colors. Once you have your linear designs concrete...then move on to color pencils or color markers. You will need to have two or three thumbnails finished...including color at the start of class. Additionally, you will need to draw out a series of squares on a sheet of bristol. These squares should be in the following sizes and quantities: Below are a few links to sites that might aid you in your design process. |

| Project Two - The Bezold Affect The Bezold Affect is credited to Wilhelm von Bezold a German physicist and Professor of Meteorology. Basically the idea is that the perception of a design cand be drastically altered by simply changing one color. Details: As indicated in the homework and class you need to invent a motif which you will then use in repetition to create pattern. The design must have four colors, no more, no less...and remember that white and black can not be used. Color selection can be very important as color relativity has the potential to be a powerful means of affecting the visual change that "is" the Bezold Affect. Media to be used: Acryla Gouache on Canvas Paper mounted on gray Illustration Board. Color requirement: No more or less than four colors can be used. In addition no pure saturated colors may be used. This will be further discussed next class but do not let this affect your development of color thumbnails. Do note that the "range of colors" you can achieve with color pencils and markers is limited. There is a much broader range of color to be explored with paint. So the colors you select in your thumbnails will be a "general idea" of the actual color. Creativity: In the Bezold Affect Gallery are two images of student works that succesfully demonstrate the Bezold Affect. The examples provided also exemplify two "generic" ways of approaching the assignment. As I mentioned in class the Bezold Affect is often employed in fashion, textile design and surface design. I encourage and expect that students will want to approach the assignment in creative ways that are of interest to them. In class I suggested that you could approach the design for this assignment as a men tie design, scarf design, or perhaps a skirt or blouse design. I am sure there are other ways, but you will need to clear any idea you have with me so that I can be assured that you understand what is required and that it will meet the criteria of the assignment. For Thursday: It is expected you will have completed thumbnails. We will review them and decide on a design. You also will need to have a concrete idea as to how you would like to approach the assignment and have all materials needed to begin the assignment in class. DUE DATE: |
